If I understand it correctly, the ad scripts running on that page should be invisible (??).
That would explain why disabling the HOSTS file seems to solve your problem.
Again, the help of someone that understands this website programming/design would help.

Hello Zee,
I have FF set to update automatically but it doesn't do so. I'll get that Adblock Plus extension too.
The ad scripts I have never seen. The BBC went to advertising late last year.
I have a question for you. How did you determine that " h t t p://ad.doubleclick.net/" was the advertising website being blocked? Because using that I went into the hosts file and searched for it. I was eventually obliged to reduce my search term(s) to ad.doubleciick and surprise surprise found ad.doubleclick.net #[MVPS.Criteria]. I excluded it and now I have no problem - all in the last few minutes. In FF or in IE hosts file on or off no - white space!
I think this is what Mike M was pushing me towards!! He is getting quite irate in his last post a little while ago.
Cheers, Zee. And let me know how to find/see that doubleclick URL.
Thanks.
Ben.
