Unhappy NVidia Driver crashing
I am having problems with my video driver. It keeps crashing and recovering, but I'm afraid one day it won't recover!
I am running Windows 7, Intel Core i5, and the error message is:
Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.
Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 259.36 stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
I've tried updating the driver, but still getting this about once a day.
I contacted HP, who made my PC, but their suggestion was a complete reformat and restore - which seems a bit drastic!
Is there any other way to solve this?

What's the model name and model number of that HP?

What's the product number(P/N) on the sticker?

Here is the HP support and software site for the HP Pavilion p6599uk desktop.

I highly suggest that you add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

According to its product specifications section, it came with Windows 7 Home Premium(64-bit) and has an Intel H57 Express chipset and has a NVIDIA GeForce G210 PCI Express x16 512 MB video card.

I've checked the software and driver downloads section, but there's no updated driver available for that video card.

Go to Control Panel - Device Manager, then click the + in "Display Adapters".

What's listed in that heading?

The most current driver for that video card for Windows 7(64-bit) is GeForce 275.33(8.17.12.7533).

It can be downloaded from here.

Oops, I meant mine is 8.17.12.5936 (which my PC keeps telling me is the most up to date) but clearly you have found a slightly more up to date one so I'll try that, thanks.

The ones Flavallee has linked are the most up to date, certified drivers from NVidia.and are the ones I have been using since they were released. I also have a HP machine although I am not using the default card, those drivers should do the job nicely.

As a point to note, don't rely on Windows update for things like Graphics card drivers as Windows is often well behind the card manufacturer. As a case in point, the drivers you had (259.36) that Windows says are 'up to date' are infact about a year old and there have been five certified updates since then, including the latest ones listed by flavallee.

Personally, I only rely on Windows update to update Windows itself.

Thanks Tanis - that's useful to know! Naively I had assumed that when I clicked "check for updates" in Device Manager>Display Adapters it would do just that - obviously I was wrong!

Loaded the up to date Driver last night (UK time) and can see it is a whole new one. Will keep my fingers crossed that solves the problem.

Windows Updates is fine for installing security-related updates and hotfixes for the operating system, but not for installing drivers for your computer's devices.

Always use the vendor sites or other reliable sites.
