Old ScanSoft files
On our current computer (CompaQ CQ2014, AMD Vision E-300 w/Radeon HD Graphics 1.30GHz, 3MB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit), we've had about 60 image files transferred from previous systems -- dating from 1997-2009, though most are from 2001-2004, all with the .MAX extension -- that either came with, or were created with, ScanSoft PaperPort software originally written for Windows 95 or earlier, which we got free with a Visioneer scanner, which we apparently still have, but have since replaced with an HP All-In-One.

ScanSoft is of course no more, having gone through a string of acquisitions, and its current owner Nuance allegedly has legacy software someplace -- more recent obviously than what came with the scanner -- with the capability to at least view, and possibly even convert, these legacy files.

The original software CD that came with the scanner may or may not still be around, but I doubt seriously we can install it in Win7. How can I find out where this more-recent software is, what to download, and how to install and use it?

Thanks.

Irfanview can display just about any image format I've ever seen. I looked in the plug-ins folder and did not see any listing for a *.max extension, but that does not mean its not there nor does it mean it may not be available (plug-ins for Irfanview are downloaded separately). If you are interested in trying the program you can do so here.

Guessing what a given product supports is a bad thing; it's better to inquire at the product's website and/or post in their forums if they have them. I've yet to hear anything from Irfanview, and meanwhile we've downloaded the legacy viewer from Nuance and also installed doPDF, which enables conversion of any image to PDF through an app's print function. If the PDF versions aren't horribly big, and it doesn't look like they are, we should be OK.
