Cool Talk to Radio Shack Multimeter without Meter Veiw
Hi,

I'm trying to work out the protocol for talking to RadioShack Multimeter 22-812 (PC Interface) without the benefit of the included software, Meter View 1.0. The software does not work on Win 7 -- which is where I want to use the meter.

I used some RS232 spy software (Advanced Serial Data Logger and Advanced Serial Port Monitor by AGG Software) to find out that the RS232 settings are 4800 baud, 8-data bits, 1 start 1 stop bit, no parity and no flow control. Every data packet is 9 bytes (18 hex digits). As long as the port settings are correct, when the meter is put in RS232 mode (by holding SELECT and RANGE keys simultaneously), the meter sends data at a rate of 1 packet every ~200ms.

Anyone out there already work this out? Here are some examples of the data I get out when the multimeter is set to report resistance in Auto Range mode.

0 ohms
#08#40#00#DF#D7#D7#D7#03#E8
0.1ohms
#08#40#00#58#D7#D7#D7#03#61
010.0ohms
#08#40#00#DF#D7#50#D7#03#61
1003 ohms
#08#60#00#72#D7#DF#50#02#1B
1004 ohms
#08#60#00#F1#D7#DF#50#02#9A

Byte 1 seems to represent a resistance measurement
Byte 2 seems to be scale: its 40 for ohms, 60 for kohms, and 50 for MOhms.
Byte 3 is always 0.

And then I flounder.
