Artera Turbo test results. If anyone cares.
Well, Artera Turbo, after sitting for ever to download and making several tweeks to the set up, the program did actually work. I posted yesterday that I was going to try it on my home computer with my earthlink connection, so I did. The program installed just fine but had a couple issues with game drivers. After I fixed these problems the software ran just fine. I did a bunch of speed tests as with my laptop yesterday and got some fairly impressive results. When I say impressive I am talking in terms of what I had to deal with before. I am limited to a 56k modem. So, any improvement over that is a definite plus. I am not a tech person so don't ask me how it works. If this intrigues you like it did me go to the site where I downloaded it. REMOVING LINK PENDING REVIEW If anyone else uses it please let me know.

Joe

There is no way to EVER get 256K from a 56K connection. The pipe is what it is and does not or will not allow more bandwidth than 56K. Ther is probably a lot of caching going on that will make it seem like a faster connection, but it is an illusion.

Don't yell at me.
I am not a tech by any stretch of the imagination so I can not argue with you on how it might be done. All I know is that it is working on both my laptop and my desktop computers. I have never had anything more than a 56k dialup so any speed increase is a good thing for me. Being curious and smart with my money I went and tested it at a public testing website and it showed some really good results. If you are skeptical maybe you should go test it for yourself. I listed the link in my last post but it was removed. If anyone wants to know where to go just make a post and then maybe they will allow me to tell you.

Clever buffering and read-ahead can easily make the connection appear faster, and appear is what you care about. In other words, while you are sitting there reading something or figuring out what button to click, the program can be reading a lot of stuff into a buffer for near instant display when you make up your mind. This is not an endorsement of any program, just pointing out that while "a pipe is a pipe", it can be made to look like a bigger pipe.

????? Huh?
So what you are saying is that the program can read ahead? I really don't understand how things like that work. I can understand cache and stuff but how does a program know what you are going to choose?

I know it's possible, your CPU reads ahead all the time, anticipating the results of jumps in the code. How this works for browzing I don't know, maybe someone else does, but I surmise this is the method of increasing apparent speed. It doesn't have to read your mind, it can read each of a number of possibilities into buffers and discard the ones that don't get used.

If you mean me, I'm no expert, and I have cable, so interest is purely theoretical. I was just responding to the person who said it was impossible.
FYI I was a BIOS programmer.

Smile Need an Artera Server in the USA
Dear cnm,

I am in the internet business using a VSAT and I did bump into artera and it worked wonders for my link. I had a link of 64/128kbps on VSAT to be shared with my VoIP servers and was an issue without artera. When I was asked by a friend to use it, it really served the purpose. Since many in the world want to save money and bandwidth, my provider has overload issues and cannot continue serving us.

I really need to use artera with a US based server to continue with my business which has stalled for the last two months. My previous test fellow is telling me to wait for 3 months which will amount to a loss on my side.

I am ready to subscribe and please send me contacts for artera services providers. My email address is m.ekal@yahoo.com, you can also chat with me on skype at malachy1390.

Regards,

Malachy
