uninstalling apple software update.
Here's the specific error message.
" There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

I've never seen this problem so i don't know what it means. Does it not see the file?

As it says, the Windows Installer is damaged and will therefore affect the installation & uninstallation of any application that uses the Windows Installer utility, not just Apple software. But it only happens for this one program. So i doubt my OS need a fresh reinstall.

No one said anything about reinstalling the OS. Not every program uses the Windows Installer so some may be successfully uninstalled. In any event, try unregistering and reregistering the Windows Installer service first as per this article:

If that doesn't work then continue on to the second step and run the System File Checker.

F8 isn't my safe mode button anymore??
I press F8 and "edit boot menu" comes up, and when I press Tab key it checks memory.

F8 used be my safe mode button and now its not. There a way to bypass that menu?

I don't know why that would happen. I'll see if I can get help from someone else. I was assuming XP (don't know why....sorry) but the unregistering/reregistering is the same. I'll post the instructions for Windows 7 specifically.

Many motherboards also use F8 to bring up their own boot menu, you'll need to select the hard drive and then press F8 again or hold CTRL to bring up the Windows start up menu. You can also force Safe Mode using MSCONFIG: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Thanks Triple6. I knew of the msconfig method but never suggest it because it can result in an endless reboot loop if certain conditions are present.

Well I did everything you asked and it didn't work. Although it sfc /purge found 2 corrupt files and they were fixed.
