Solved: sascore.exe
Updated to latest version of SuperAntiSpyware (free version).

There is a new service running on automatic named sascore.exe. I Googled it and found numerous sites talking about the process, but no real good explanation regarding what it does. All I've found is the following:
Quote:
it's a required component of SUPERAntiSpyware's on-demand and real-time scanning as well as product updates. If it is not running, scanning effectiveness will be reduced. If SUPERAntiSpyware is not running, the core service will not be using any processor time and an insignificant amount of memory.
I do NOT have SAS starting with windows and launch it whenever I want to run a scan. I always run manual updates and "scanning effectiveness" is a bit vague. Anyone have any experience/insight to this process?

That service has been there for quite a while. I noticed it one day after running HijackThis. SAS says it needs to be there at all times even if the program isn't set to load with Windows and it doesn't use much system resources.

Guess I was looking for more than a repeat of what has already been said by the SAS site. Its not a question of trust, but one of attempting to understand, learn and minimize programs running in the background.

If it is really needed, fine, I'd just like to understand as much I my feeble, rum soaked brain is capable of absorbing.

Anyone else???

So far, SAS is quite vague about it. They only say "leave it and don't ask questions"...

Yeah, that's what bugs me. I'm not very good at simply doing as I'm told.

Perhaps they don't want to reveal anything for security reasons... Or, they might be spying on us...

as far as I can tell, it is for security reasons
it appears to be a method of keeping SAS running when malware tries to shut it down when scanning or cleaning files

lots of moderen malware will attempt to shut down any running security tools on teh system or stop other tools from being started
A quick look at the file suggests that it protects SAS to prevent malware shutting it down or stopping it from starting

Thanks for that dvk01. Sounds like a reasonable purpose for functionality of the program.

Unfortunate such steps are necessary, but that appears to be the world we live in.
