I have a hp dv4 laptop tha runs on Windows 7. Here are the specifics:

My laptop is running somewhat slow and I want to clean it up because I have a new job working from my computer at home and I would like to clean of anything that is slowing it down. I have used the site many times before and it has been very helpful in doing exactly this.

What's the complete model number of that HP Pavilion dv4 series laptop?

If you don't know for sure, advise us what the product number(P/N) and/or model number(M/N) on the sticker is.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Name" column that have their startup type set on Automatic and Automatic(Delayed Start).

If the "Name" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list and in alphabetical order.

Make sure to spell them correctly.

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Uncheck these startup entries:

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit without Restart.

Change the "Startup Type" to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're all done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

Note: If you actually use the LightScribe software to burn labels on discs, leave its startup entry checked and leave its service entry "Startup Type" on Automatic.

After the above has been done, run the laptop for awhile to see if speed has improved and if everything is still working okay.

Here is the support and software site for the HP Pavilion dv4-2145dx Entertainment Notebook(WA889UA#ABA).

I suggest you add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

According to its product specifications, it came with 4096 MB(4 GB) of RAM.

Because it's running Windows 7 SP1(64-bit), it'll recognize and use the entire 4 GB.

Although it supports up to 8192 MB(8 GB) of RAM, I don't recommend maxing it out because of the cost and because it won't make a noticable improvement in speed.

I suggest you purchase the recovery disc kit for it from here or here.

If the built-in recovery partition becomes damaged or if the hard drive needs to be replaced, you'll need the kit to get it going again.
