"Standard VGA graphics adapter" in Device Manager means your laptop is currently using Microsoft's basic VGA driver which is built-in to Windows. This is the default driver when the correct third-party driver is missing.

You need to download the correct driver from Acer's website. Do not download/install a driver from anywhere else because only Acer have the correct drivers for your Aspire laptop:

Acer USA: http://support.acer.com/us/en/default.aspx

Acer UK: http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers

If you've already installed a graphics driver from some other source, uninstall it before installing the correct one.

Gonna try this now, although i think i tried it earlier and ended up either getting a blue screen after restarting, or black screen after restarting.
