SLOOOW computer and delayed typing
My machine was running fine for a while (since removing the MyPoints toolbar in a previous thread) but in the last couple of weeks it's slowed to a crawl. Typing is often (though not always) delayed and pages take for ever to load. I've installed ESET and have found no malware and also run Malbytes with the same result i.e no malware present. What would you suggest I do next please?

Thanks,

Fran

It looks like you're referring to this thread and reopened it 4 days ago.

Sometimes, doing a clean reinstall of Windows and getting a fresh start is the best option.

-----------------------------------------------------------

What's the model name and model number of that Dell?

If you don't know for sure, advise what the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker is.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here.

According to service tag number 5QC2T91, your computer is a Dell Dimension 9150/Dell XPS 400 desktop.

This site is specific only to your desktop, so you might want to add and save it in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it whenever needed.

According to its system configuration section, it was purchased in November 2006.
Considering it's almost 6 years old and has probably accumulated a lot of "debris" and some issues during that time, you might want to consider doing a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3 and getting a fresh start with it.

You might also want to consider adding another 1 GB of DDR2 PC2-5300(DDR2-667) RAM to it.
It came with a 512 MB module in 2 of its 4 slots, so adding 2 more 512 MB modules to the 2 empty slots will accomplish that.

-------------------------------------------------------

Right-click My Computer, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the

Computer:

section at the bottom of the "General" tab - EXACTLY as you see it there.

-------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

Under My Computer>Properties>General Tab I have:

Intel(R)
Pentium(R)
D CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 1.00BG of RAM
Physical Address Extension

I did a clean install about 9 months ago and the machine was running fine till I installed the MyPoints toolbar (very stupid of me, I know).
I'm pretty sure I was hacked about 4 weeks ago as two or three user names became invalid and that's what prompted me to install ESET. However that's found no malware so I'm stumped. I'll do a resinstall if I have to but let's try a few things first if we can please.

Here's the startup menu - ( am unable to expand the window to give you full directory locations - can you work with this?):
ehtray
atiptaxx
stsystra
APSDaemon
egui
Skype
Adobe Gamma Loader
AutoStart IR
McAfee Security Sc
SnagIt 8

Thanks,

Fran

The processor is running at its rated speed of 2.80 GHz and has NOT throttled down to a noticably slower speed.

All 1 GB of RAM is being used by Windows.

Note: You still should add another 1 GB.

-------------------------------------------------------

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Uncheck these startup entries:

atiptaxx

Adobe Gamma Loader

McAfee Security Scan

SnagIt 8

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

Adobe Active File Monitor

Adobe Flash Player Update Service

Ati HotKey Poller

ATI Smart

Google Update Service

Google Update Service

Java Quick Starter

McAfee Security Scan Component Host Service

Mozilla Maintenance Service

PC Tools Startup and Shutdown Monitor service

Skype Updater

Yahoo! Updater

Change the "Startup Type" to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're done, restart the computer.

When the small System Configuration Utility window appears during restart, ignore its message.

Put a check in the lower left of that window BEFORE you click OK to close it.

----------------------------------------------------------

Wait for the computer to completely settle down from the restart.

Go to Add Or Remove Programs, then uninstall/remove:

McAfee Security Scan

Everything that's associated with PC Tools
