Cannot get rid of Softonic in my Google Chrome Browser.
For some strange reason under the CHrome Browser> Settings> Search Softonic shows up as a search engine. Now other seach engines listed alongside it in the dropdown menu allow for deletion upon rollover and an EXIT /Close "X" in the upper right hand corner. But not Softonic. There is no way to get rid of it.

Can anyone help provide some insight?

Have you downloaded this in the past? Doing a search for Softonic showed it as a browser that probably installed into Google Chrome. Check: Control Panel/Add & Remove programs and see if it's listed there. As far as your search engine goes you should be able to just click on the drop down arrow and select another one.

I don't believe Softonic to be malicious, as some may be claiming in Google search results.

However, if you can't remove it the normal way, there may be corruption of the software preventing its proper removal.

The following program will often remove annoying toolbars and search engines (even the ones that aren't really malicious) where others can't.

Please download AdwCleaner.
  • Double click the adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click Search.
  • When the scan is finished, a notepad window will be opened.
  • Please post the contents here in your topic.
  • The logfile will also be saved in C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt.
