If you Google "registry compactor" instead, you'll get plenty to try.

RegCompact.NET just released a free version 1.7:

The free NTRegOpt also works quite well:

And, a recent compaction success story:

"Elvandil": Thanks for all those references. The "success story" thread was very worthwhile and illustrates the "need" to CAREFULLY tweak the Registry if you want a well running computer using Windows. I have settled on CCleaner, RegFirstAid and "One Click Maintenance" of the TuneUpUtilities suite, while still evaluating the additional advantage of AdvancedSystemOptimizer, insofar as Reg cleaners go. I am currently evaluating the "compresser" from Rose City that is the successor to their earlier "compactor." It definitely improved the speed of my computer's routine gyrations. I am now going to check-out the one from RegCompact.net mentioned in the previous post. It is freeware.

When I run Spysweeper it reports having checked more registy items every time I use it. It's up over 70,000 now. Anyone have any clue if that number is significant?

Hi..good ?..You may over time have deleted programs from your system..but their entries remain in the Registry..is that a possibility?
If so they can be removed from the registry..making sure you only remove entries for programs you know have been removed..

My Registry item count in Spysweeper is 50990, and this is an old '98 computer with very few of the 'modern' accessories, such as DVD/CDR, broadband, webcam etc. etc.

I routinely use a Registry cleaner and I assume that it is working properly and removing all the redundant entries that blues_harp mentions. As he said, lots of programs (and their installers) fail to clean up after themselves, so the Registry slowly grows in size. There is an ongoing debate about whether or not the overstuffed Registry actually does any harm.

Alternatively, the increase may be related to Spysweeper updates causing it to look for more 'traces' and those are what are being counted.

Just got this the other day so have not used it much but it is smail and simple and no install needed.
Just unzip the zip to it's own folder and then there are two more zips. I only unzipped the regshot1_7_2

Regshot

Regshot is a small and open-sourced registry compare utility that allows you to quickly take a snapshot of your registry and then compare it with a second one - done after doing system changes or installing a new software product. The changes report can be produced in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between snapshot1 and snapshot2. In addition, you can also specify folders (with sub filders) to be scanned for changes as well.

To: hewee

1) I ran regshot and saved the file to afolder, but when I go to afolder to look at it, it's not there?

2) Regshot is waiting for "2nd shot" and doesn't give an option to do it later? only to quit?

The free version of Langalist had a good article about registry cleaners that he also put in Infoweek.

It had one or two free ones but the others were commercial.

It is worth reading though because he discusses the value of them too.

thepcjanitor,

When you run regshot you got to save it so you need to have the path in the "output path" box.
Then when you click on the "1st shot" you have 3 options. Shot, shot and save and load.
So pick the "shot and save".
