Norton Ghost 10 uninstall...any experiences?
I've used Norton Ghost uneventfully for about 3 months, however for some reason beginning a few days ago it starts the process of making a backup and locks up giving an error message (which I can provide if someone thinks they can make heads or tails out of it)...it takes up 100% of the CPU and never completes the backup process.

I sent an e-mail to Symantec, and am awaiting a response, but I'm not holding my breath that it will be helpful.

I was debating unistalling/reinstalling the program...but I've seen some recommend using add/remove programs and some the Symantec removal tools found here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

Some recommend using both? Anyone have any experience with this process and does this sound like a reasonable approach (uninstalling and reinstalling the program that is)?

Thanks for any advice.

I'd first try the normal Windows uninstall, then move on to more extreme measures if that doesn't work.

Hi,

is this an endless loop of Ghost booting into PC DOS and then failing.

If so then you may have a problem similar to one I recently had

All explained here, complete with solution

http://www.pcqanda.com/dc/dcboard.ph...d=394889&page=

Unistalling Ghost does not solve the issue detailed as you would still have the small Active Partition with PC DOS on it which starts up every time you boot

Only by deleting the Small Ghost Active Partition and making your normal C: drive back into the active partition is this solved.

The solution only took me a few minutes. I thought I was looking at a full week of re-installation work.

Starting with the WIN 98 SE boot disk and displaying partitions clearly showed the "new" active partition.

A tricky Ghost issue which I'd not seen posted anywhere before on any forum.

Thanks for the reply ceri...

My problem though is not that Ghost starts and fails (and then closes with options)...it starts then just sits there taking up the entire CPU and never finishes...it gets bad enough that I have to occasionally do a 'hard' powerdown to stop it as I cannot even get taskmgr up to stop the process that way.

If Symantec is no help, I think I'll try 'add/remove' programs with the symantec tools as back up and pray it doesn't 'crash' my system!

Hi,

Boot from a Win 98 SE floppy disk and check out FDISK

This may tell you if you have the "hidden" Ghost Active partition that "messes" things up

Running Ghost 2003, I would consider a Win 98 boot disk an essential accessory

Actually, I've got Ghost 10 and a Win XP Pro machine...would the instructions still work? I'm not sure...

Hi,

Can't answer that one. I've not moved to anything above Ghost 2003

You have nothing to loose by booting from a WIN 98 SE boot disk though.

If you have the extra now active small partition then you have the answer.

If you don't have a new small Active Partition, then simply exit FDISK

I can't see that Ghost >2003 can work any other way than to create the "new" Active partition and boot from this to run PC DOS.

Beyond that then I'm sorry I can't help.

HI is it rude for me to join this thread? I am new to this forum but I have this same problem with ghost 2003 booting to Dos and can't get out. but it is my friend's brand new computer and it doesn't have an A ( no floppy )drive. Is there anyway to get fdisk onto a cd? Or does anyone have any suggestions what to do barring putting in a floppy drive? And if I do install a floppy drive which I really HATE to do on her brand new pc... how do I know which one is the "hidden" ghost partition? I am really really upset that I have done this to her brand new computer. IT is a Dell and I only wanted to give her a bootable windows cd in case her hard drive died. It only has a D partition on the hard drive so I thought if her hard drive died she wouldn't ever be able to reinstall her OS.

HI ..sorry to butt in again but I managed to figure out how to make put floppy boot disk onto a bootable cd , did what you said and it worked. I was rather frightened it wouldnt since her major partition was NTFS but it did.. thank you SOSOSOSO much. I thought I had hooped her computer forever. Normally I would just format and carry on but couldn't even do that .. goes to show do NOT EVER buy a computer without a windows cd.. BLECH.. thank you all SO very very much
