Usually it will say on the front of the drive what it is capable of doing. My old laptop can old Read DVD and Cd. I have no burning function. You could install a free burning application to see if it will burn a cd.

What is the make and model of your laptop and the drive?

How is the drive listed in Windows' Hardware device manager?

For Windows XP:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System ->
Hardware Tab -> Device Manager Button ->

Expand entries in list to find what is shown under "DVD/CD-ROM Drives"

If you install a DVD/Cd burning application and there is no compatible Burning device, it won't show up in the list of devices you can use to burn a CD or DVD. No need to go out and purchase anything. Just download one of the free Burning apps like Deep Burner or CDBurnerXp Pro.
