Internet Causes Computer to Freeze. Help Please!
My computer has gotten really slow. If I'm using the internet, it will freeze up, and I manually have to turn it off. I have a Dell laptop with Windows Pro SP2. I've run several virus scans and I'm coming up clean. I ran AdAware today and came up clean. After that, I thought I was ok, but then I tried to do scan using Panda Active Pro, and I froze up again. Whenever I get on the internet, my CPU goes through the roof and will get stuck at 100%. I'm not sure what's wrong.

I'm pretty much computer illiterate, and new to this site. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

What do I have to do to get assistance? I have no idea if I have a hardware problem or a virus/malware problem.

Sometimes, to get assistance, you just have to wait a bit. When they raise my pay, I'll respond faster.
It would be nice to know how much memory you have-Right-click My Computer/Properties and the number should be listed.
What's using all those CPU cycles?
Right-click the Taskbar/Task Manager/Processes. Click the Mem usage Tab and tell us the top 5-6 processes. Ctrl-alt del also brings up Task Manager.
How many icons are in the system tray? Many of these icons are often unnecessary and use memory unnecessarily.
Open Control Panel/Admin Tools/Event Viewer. Look for red marks under System and application and see if any errors are coincident with this freezing.
There are some tips here that might help:
http://www.tweak3d.net/joomla/tweak-...ute-xp-tune-up

This could be a hardware problem, especially heat issues or memory problems. Does the computer freeze at any other time?

Thank you so much for your response! I apologize for my impatience. I'm just about to toss this lap top into the Grand Canyon. I truly do appreciate any help you can give. I think I've answered your questions below.

I have 504MB of RAM.
It is iexplore.exe and System that uses us the CPU when I go online. I work from home and utilize a web based program quite a bit.
It shows that I have 44 processes, but I've tried to end processes and it doesn't work or remove anything.
I do have some errors in event viewer, but they don't appear to be related to the freezing up.

It really only freezes up when I am on the internet. I don't know if it's malware or not. I tried a Panda Active Pro online scan, and it froze up. I also tried the Kaspersky online scanner, and it said I had 6 virus and 12 infected objects. But, the scan froze at 92% and I had to manually shut down. When I powered back up, I couldn't figure out how to access Kaspersky again to try and print a repot. But I have run Symantec, AVG, and AdAware and they all came up clean.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Here is a new Hijack This log. Please let me know what else I should do. Thank you for your help. You really are a lifesaver!

My cpu is shoots up to 100% whenever I go to a different web page. Is that normal? When I'm working, sometimes I have several different web programs running. I work in Oracle and a couple other web based programs alot. It still seems like it's very slow, but nothing is freezing up yet.

I have Symantec and can't unistall it because it is required by my work. Should I use anything else? Will keeping the SuperAnitSpyware be enough?

Thank you!

How many anti virus did you install? If you install more than once, it'll cause your computer a slow down.

I had AVG in addition to Symantec. I uninstalled AVG today. I also have used Panda Active Scan Pro and Kaspersky online scanner. Should I uninstall both of those as well? I'm stuck using the Symantec unfortunately.

Did my new Hijack This log look ok? Do you think I should reimage? That is the only thing the ITs at my job have suggested. They didn't didn't do any trouble shooting though.

Thanks again for your help.

I'd start with more memory, which is usually a cheap and easy fix.
In your case, I'd suggest going to 2 GB, which I think is the sweet spot for XP.
I'd consider trying Firefox, also.

I will try more memory. I hope this doesn't make me sound too stupid, but can I buy it at Best Buy and install it myself?

What is Fire Fox? Is it something I would use as an alternative to Internet Explorer?

Thanks!

FireFox is another internet browser like netscape, more efficient than microsoft internet

Try to go to safe mode and see if you can uninstall the norton.

Reboot the computer, after you see a dell screen, press F8 right away and go to Safe Mode.
