AVG Free 8.0
Any experience to date with the latest release of AVG Free (v8.0.1). Any problems so far?

I downloaded it a few days ago and it ran great until I rebooted. None of my startup programs were loaded and the mouse cursor would move but not work after rebooting. Went into safe mode, removed AVG 8.0 and all was well.

Being stubborn and a slow learner, I tried again the next day with the same results but had the same results. Took it off again and it is not going back on for a few more weeks. AVG has been outstanding software for me for many years and I will not permanently abandon the program but will wait for some fixes and patches before going back.

so far just one major complaint - AVG's spyware module conflicts with spybots immunization feature, it reports warnings about registry entries spybot uses to foil some drive by hijack attempts.
two minor complaints - as of yet I have not been able to figure out how to set AVG to automatically scan file transfers through windows live messenger (the command line used with AVG7.5 doesn't work properly any more), and if you choose to deactivate a module because you don't want / need it AVG reports an error condition in your notification tray (I don't like link scanner and leave that disabled which reports as an error and I prefer leaving the update scheduler turned off and updating manually ... hate having a game I'm playing minimize on me when the updater kicks in and my comp is turned off at night so a "while I'm sleeping update is out of the question)

I installed 8 to find that my bootup time was increased by about a minute, then i wanted to stop that new thing that checks links because it slows page load time, well i stopped it and it kept saying error, well no error i didn't want it. Lucky for me i still have v.7 backed up so uninstalled v.8 and now have v.7 again.

Many thanks to all who responded. I can always depend on this forum to provide some objective info on new releases. After reading the responses, I think I'll stick with AVG 7.5 for now. I'll just keep tracking the subject and let it evolve as things like this eventually do.

I installed it on my pc as raybro was the one who first pointed out to me by reading this thread that 8 was now in a free edition. It does not seem to affect my startup at all (although mine im not too happy with between the toshiba garbage for the keyboard/comdo) but i can definitely say the new interface is going to take some getting used to. I did like the old one much better as it was cleaner and simpler than this....IMO avg is going downhill and im thinking of moving to avast.

you can disable that in your browser itself (and not get the resulting error warning). You'll find it in both the add ons for firefox and IE7, I disabled it there.

There is a simple way to uninstall it completely: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1241#faq_1241

That's not going to stop the lag @ startup.

I have AVG 8 full version on desktop but my laptop is no where near as powerful.

Oh and have just checked we will still get updates for 7.5 and AVG will give us plenty of notice before they discontinue.

I've started upgrading systems from AVG 7.5 to 8.0 this past weekend. So far, I've done one and I've got another one I'll upgrade tonight. I haven't encountered any problems with the one machine I've upgraded thus far but we'll see how things go.

Peace...
