I enjoy and have had great luck using a combination of AVG, SpywareBlaster, Spybot Search&Destroy and even AdAware at times. Those seem to be the big winners for most people, they are safe and proven.

Others will attest to loving SpySweeper, CounterSpy and Spyware Terminator. Those are nice as well, the first 2 are not free, while Spyware Terminator is.

Also SuperAntiSpyware is apparently becoming pretty popular as well.

I'm sure all of these are available at http://www.download.com or sites like it.

Hope that helps :d

I've had good success with AVG anti-spyware, Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware.

Peace...

AVG Free and Avast's Home Edition are both great anti-virus tools.

The new AVG 8 Free is great, and contains both antivirus and antispyware rather than just antivirus like the old version.

I've used AVG in the past...it's good, but I prefer Avast!
I also run much of what others have listed, but I seldom see root kits addressed.
I periodically run RootkitRevealer and AVG AntiRootkit.

AVG is a great spyware program but May 31 2008 is the last day of free service. After that, there will be no more free updates. I use stopzilla. After a 20 dollar rebate, it is only $39.00. That's one payment for a lifetime of service. There are also 1 and 2 year plans.

Welcome to TSG

From the looks of it, it isn't highly regarded by users posting at C|net

A lot of complaints.

AVG is free, and the updates continue.
"AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product. Rapid virus database updates are available for the lifetime of the product,..."
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...-10320142.html

That's a zero dollar payment for the life of the product. Anyone who thinks they're getting a "lifetime of service" from any internet company should check out this bridge I have for sale.
I've used AVG for years and have never gotten a virus.

Yeah, as others have said, the best combination as of a few weeks ago was;

AVG Antivirus 2.0
Spybot search and destroy
Zone alarm (or comodo) Firewall

However, many techies now don;t reccomend Spybot (if I am thinking of the right program here) becuase the makers now do not offer real time updates. Another good alternative is a PC Tools one.)

Malwarebyes is a good free program

It doesnt have real time protection unless you buy it but well worth having

Also update before you run a scan
