PC PitStop Optimize
This is what the program is if you don't know.

http://pcpitstop.com/store/optimize2.asp

I ran the test and it showed me what needed to be optimize, but since it is a free program it doesn't do the fixes for me. So I am just wondering if it is safe for me to actually do what it recommends if you all can guide me through it?

Here is a list of suggestions for optimizing:

HTTP (2 changes recommended)
MaxConnectionsPerServer=5
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server=5

TCP/IP (7 changes recommended)MTU=1492
DefaultTTL=64
EnablePMTUDiscovery=1
EnablePMTUBHDetect=1
TcpMaxDupAcks=2
Tcp1323Opts=1
SackOpts=1

Performance Tweaks
BrowseRemoteTasks=(Delete Key)
CompressOldFiles=(Delete Key)
MenuShowDelay=250
ContigFileAllocSize=512
NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate=1

There is more I'll post them later.

Hi I have used PcPitStop Optimize in the distant past.
But as with all Optimizers it is difficult to see any change in performance and it could be a lot of work for very little return.
If you do decide to make any changes, always make a note of the existing settings if case you need to return to those.

Go to Speedguide.net and download their free TCP/IP Optimizer. On certain hardware it can make a dramatic difference. Most notably, my own laptop, Windows default settings give me speeds of around 2.8 mb a second speeds, with the settings optimized I get speeds of around 6.8 mbs.

Does it automatically do the optimizing? And is it generally safe, as in won't screw up my internet?

TCP/IP Optimizer is safe..used it on number of computers.
Open it, and put a checkmark in Optimal Settings. Click Apply changes button.
Restart computer.

how are you testing to see 2.8 up to 6.8, test sites or real downloads? i show 2.6 on the test.
maybe everybody sees 2.6 or so.

what do you show on the pitstop test?
i show 4922kbps on a 5M roadrunner connection.

Be aware, that those speed tests don't really show much. Just a ballpark.

If I go to Speedtest.net, i got this:

Similar at http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp

..but at Speedguide.net

Any test site that I go to consistently shows around 2.8 mb sec speeds, as soon as I apply the Optimizations I consistently get speeds rated for my connection speed, namely around 7 mb a sec. Same with true data transfer rates, without the Optimization I get consistent transfer rates that are less than half of what I get with Optimization.
As I stated this is with my Gateway Tablet Laptop. I have also used the Optimization on computers and showed no significant gain in speeds. If you are consistently not getting close to your rated speeds then quite likely your network hardware is not set up for optimum speed.
