I have worked for days trying to uninstall adobe acrabat reader 7 and install adobe reader 8 and have not been able to. I need adobe 8(free version) for my banking. I have even taken adobe 7 out of my register and it is still in my programs. I download adobe acrabat reader 8.1.2 and the computer tells me error 1714 the older version of 8.1.2 cannot be removed and it won't even download it...I sure hope someone can help me as I have tried everything I know to try. My wife crystalclear has so much confidence in you guys I thought I would try. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me. my operating system is windows xp. I have att high speed broadban service. This is my first post

Find the exact version that you have, then download and reinstall it from here. Once that is done, restart your computer and uninstall it.

I went to that website and could't figure it out. remember I'm a beginner. I have adobe reader 7.0.8 in my computer that I cant uninstall. I did install the windows clean up utility( i think thats what its called). but couldn't find the adobe reader 7.0.8 on the site you sent me to. there seemed to be alot of versions??????? I put it in the search window and alot of different options came up...bu not one to install adobe reader 7.0.8 what do I do next?

I did what you said , installed it, uninstalled it and restarted the computer and it was still there. when I try to uninstall adobe reader 7.0.8 it tells me "the patch package could not be opened. verify that the patch pkg. exists and that you can access it or contact the applicartion vender to verify that this is a valid windows installer package. also when I down load version 8.1.2 it tells me the older version of 8 cannot be removed. error 1714. I dont see an older version of 8 in my programs. there are three updated to version 7. maybe thats it????thanks for your suggestion...any more? I did find out more about the version 7. It said it cannot be uninstalled.......?????? what now

Adobe provide some manual uninstallation instructions which involve removing files and folders and Registry editing, so you would need to backup the Registry and create a Restore point before you did anything. Adobe helpfully state that they don't support Registry editing, so here's the MS document about it; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

If all this seems too much, and you don't require a particulaly advanced pdf reader, think about giving up on Adobe and trying Foxit Reader instead. Here are the details; http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/ If you do try it, make sure you accept the option for it to be your default pdf reader and it should automatically open them.

thanks togg: that is what I did, they gave me instructions for error 1714. I didn't change from adobe because that is what my bank uses. so everything is A-O.K.

Good to hear that you seem to be OK now!

I know that many, if not all, websites that offer pdf content will routinely assume that you have Adobe (and provide a link to it if you don't - some financial incentive from Adobe perhaps?)

Personally, I doubt very much that your bank software wouldn't work with Foxit. I gave up on Adobe some time ago and every pdf document I have used since has opened without any difficulty.

Whatever, I'm not a salesman for Foxit and am not trying to deflect you from using software that you are happy with. Just keep it in mind in case you have problems with Adobe in future.
