MSN Messenger
I can't install the proper msn messenger on my computer, reason being whenever I try to install any version it prompts me to download the newer version "windows live" but in order to install this it tries to make me download "windows xp" updates that I do not want. I've even tried msn messenger portable but the same thing happens. please help.

You can go here and download an older version: http://www.oldapps.com/msn_messenger.htm

Try version 7.5 and work backward until you find one that works. I think version 7.0 still worked with XP SP1.

I think there's a way to install the other versions even if you get the message to upgrade. I reinstalled XP SP2 a while back and I installed msn messenger 7.0. I remember getting the upgrade message, but I was still able to install 7.0.

But if you have 5.0 installed and working maybe you should just stick with that.
