Software to encrypt a file
Hi,

Does anybody know any way that I can encrypt a file which is still accessible by another program....I.E - a configuration file for a program....

Basically there is a configuration file for this program which tells the program the amount of users that are allowed to log in.

If anyone knows/locates where this file is stored they can edit the amount of licences. Therefore I need a way that encrypts the file, doesn't allow it to be edited but it could be viewable.

Hope thats clear.

Cheers.

You may or may not have it, encryption is only available as a feature with WinXP Pro it isn't part of the home version

I strongly suggest you do not use Windows XP's encryption features. If you do not back up the encryption key correctly and for whatever reason need to reinstall your system, you will lose the files with no chance of recovery.

Doublehelix is right..How about using NTFS permissions... this way you can limit the users who could access the files rather than the cumbersome encryption..

NTFS permissions is the best way to do this. Everyone who uses the software would just need read permissions. As long as they are not part of the administrators group, they shouldn't be able to change the permissions or the file itself.
