I would just replace the drive. I had the exact same problem and nothing I tried worked. I was able to get a brand new DVD burner for about $20 and it took all of about 5 minutes to install it. It is so easy to install that even a newbie could do it. The only other thing you can do at this point is to remove the case and make sure that the cables are not loose.

I'm using Vista and whenever a application crashes while access the dvd drive, the drive tends to "disappear". Only a reboot will bring it back. I don't know why this is, just one of the pitfalls of using Windows.

If the cleaner doesn't work, I would go with previous suggestions of getting a new drive. Not terribly expensive and fairly easy to install. You can google "install cd drive" for instructions if necessary.
