D drive is missing and I have no clue what to do.
I was trying to put in a program into the DVD-rom where I always install programs from and it won't read the disk. When I went to run and typed in the setup D:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. Now I did go and read a post like this in here, BUT when I go into the device manager, I don't see anything about a D drive or DVD, CD nothing, I clicked on every line to open each one up to see what was listed below and nothing states anything about dvd, d drive, cd in the sub-categorys. So I'm at a loss in what to do to get this D drive back into my system. I have no idea where it went and why. It actually has been about 6 months since I have used this drive so I don't know what it wrong. I certainly would appreciate the help... TY nurses-r-angels

Does the drive show up in the BIOS settings?

Does the drive have any front panel lights that blink on during power up?

When you insert a disc, can you hear it spin up?

Have you moved the computer or done any work inside of it?

The BIOS is sometimes called "Setup" and should be accessible during boot. Look for a line like "Press Delete to enter setup" or maybe F1 or F2. Tell us the make of your PC and we can be more helpful.
DVD drives do fail from time to time. I would open the case and make sure the connections are still intact.
If this drive is not showing in Device Manager, there's a significant hardware problem.

Thanks for the reply: The drive ISN'T showing up in the device manager. So if there's a significant hardware problem, then what do I do? Do I take it to a repair shop? The make of the PC is by Northgate. I have owned this computer for 7 years and haven't had any problems with it. It has been a good one. In the device manager I have opened up ever + that is in there and can't see anything that says anything about DVD or CD....

Try method 2 here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
These drives do fail, but they're cheap, and easy to replace.

If editing the registry seems daunting, refer to Elvandil's post and download the reg file.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...e-missing.html

Restart when done.

Hello everyone:
Ok I did ALL of this showing below, one at a time...
In the regedit: Steps 1, 2, 3, YES they are there but step 4....Doesn't say anything about lowerfilters, upperfilters, on any of the {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} nor does it show up to the right either... Then I went and did the CD Gone and it didn't fix anything either.. Does anyone have anymore suggestions?

I did this showing below.....
"Click on START button, the click on RUN.
2. Enter REGEDIT and press Enter.
3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.
Or you can download this reg file to do the same thing. Or CDGone Variant."

Thanks again for help in advance! Debi

Ok here is what I'm showing.....

My computer:
Devices with removable storage...
3 1/2 Floppy (A
Removable Disk (F
Removable Disk (D

Disk drive... SV4002H (Samsung)
The device is working properly(said before I did a troubleshoot and after I did a trouble shoot)

Under start, run. D:\setup.exe says.....Please insert a disk into drive D... Ok now that I said all of this, is my DVD player shot? I have put in the disk, I heard it spin, even looked to see if the writing moved and it had. The light lights up and turns orange as normal. BUT of course it doesn't continue to stay lite. What does anyone think...

Thanks, DEBI

I suggest you try a dvd lense cleaner. After 7 years a little dust could have built up inside your drive.

Hey Mike I have one of those, I will try that and see if it will clean it up, If not guess a new DVD player is on the list... I just can't understand where the heck the D drive goes and then pops up if it decides to, even though I can't use it even if it is showing ? Why is that?
