registry cleaning
Does anyone have some suggestions on a good free registry cleaner.
I downloaded the free trial of RegCure but after scan it says I have to purchase full version to fix all problems.
Is there any good freeware out there.

Search for similar topics on registry cleaners on this site, and most often you will come on comments as to not use them. Its better to avoid registry cleaners.

I have noticed many say to leave it alone.
But why? also if you do leave it alone doesn't the errors start piling up on computer.
Also does windows disk cleanup do anything to the same effect?

YES ...
And it also removes all the other junk, viruses or root kits not caught by your Anti-virus, and it fixes all that ails your computer.
And it's extremely safe ... It's called a fresh restore of Windows.

That is the whole point. They are not "errors" at all. They are called that to scare people. And repairs make even more real errors that the programs then see as being "correct".

Unused registry keys are not "errors". In many cases, if not most, the keys are left there on purpose by developers so that if you reinstall a program or component, your settings have not been lost.

I'm going to add my reply to the list. Stay away from registry cleaners!

RegCure, Registry Booster, Registry Mechanic(to name a few) will let you do a scan and then display a ton of "errors" in order to get you to buy the product before you can make full use of it.

The problem is that they find some valid registry entries as "errors". Once you "fix" them and then restart your computer, you discover that one or more programs no longer work. In a worse case scenario, the operating system crashes and you're left with a heavy door stop.

I always recommend a "sledge hammer"...common variety found at any hardware outlet. It is far more rewarding in that the damage makes you feel so much better and is equally non repairable with no great searching required for cures to issues!

You might want to try Ashampoo WinOptimizer. They offer a 15 day Free Trial on a full program. Use it and then remove if you don't like it. Just go to www.ashampoo.com

One, it works and second, it is a full program that you can use for free for 15 days without having to buy to get it to work.

The claims of "optimizers" and "boosters" are very questionable, and they can actually slow down a computer while they're running in the background.

Don't use WinOptimizer, either. Here is another thread from the supposedly well-trusted "Registry Mechanic":

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...xtensions.html

I stopped using that one when it messed up Windows 98. It seems to have gotten worse instead of better.
