Did you install all the drivers (including the graphics driver) after installing the OS? Connect an external monitor to the laptop and send output to it (you have hit some combination of Fn+ some function key depending on the brand and model of laptop). If the problem is still present on the external monitor, the problem is in the motherboard, graphics card or drivers of the laptop. If the display appears on the external monitor, but the LCD remains dark, there is some problem with the LCD or its connection to the motherboard.
