Solved: RegSeeker
I ran Regseeker and now my desktop background only displays a portion of the picassa pic I point to. Actually, it's okay when XP first comes up, then the desktop goes the default purple background and adds my icons. The final refresh is when the pic is incorrect. What registry setting needs to be reset?

Hi and welcome.
Did you click on Back Up, in Regseeker before you let it clean the registry?
Allowing it to back up the registry first?

If yes, undo all the changes it made.

Regseeker Backup
I should have mentioned I did. Unfortunately I haven't figured out how to restore from backup. There are several entries when I click on backup. There are three CLEAN entries, three MRU, two OLDSTART and one RESTORE DESKTOP ICONS. At the bottom "backup before deletion" is checked along with two choices; select and action.
I think I want MRU, but I'm not sure. So basically, I can't figure out what to do or how to do it.

Should be option on how an image is displayed. Like center, tile, stretch.

MRU is most recently used files.
What ever back up you let Reg Seeker make, I undo all those changes.

Using any Reg Cleaner can and as you have found, does remove valid files.

Those are not options. I can view or open regedit.

Go to where the backups are stored C:\Program Files\RegSeeker\Backup

Double-click on a .reg file and that will merge those entries back into the registry. Do that for all the .reg files that are in there.

FYI, below is advice posted here at TSG re registry "fixers" that I copied into a file.
{redoak}

Advice and Info re Registry 'cleaners'- excerpts from TSG, 10-07

The main reason they (are apt to cause problems) is because the cleaners do NOT just clean up stuff left over from uninstalls. They also "guess" that other items need to be deleted, many times incorrectly. They also attempt to "fix" references to files that no longer exist.

As a result, you can end up with programs that no longer work, functions that no longer work and in some cases a PC that will no longer boot.

There is no performance gains to be had by running these things. Windows does not read the entire registry when it is looking for something. It uses the keys which allow them to go straight to the item that they are looking for.

If you really want to see how active the registry is in your normal running environment, download and run Regmon.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...on/Regmon.mspx

As you will see, the registry is constantly being accessed. If, for each of these, the entire file was being searched, your PC would be amazingly slow and not responsive.

immeto:

RegSeeker(and any other registry cleaner) should never be used in a computer.

Besides finding and deleting invalid registry entries, they also delete valid registry entries that they detect as being invalid.

This results in certain programs no longer working, and can also trash the operating system.

This particular registry cleaner used to be well known for breaking Microsoft programs, such as Office, Works, Picture It, etc..

I suggest you go through your list of programs and see if they all still work.

And just for your information, using a registry cleaner will not improve performance or speed, nor will it cure your computer problems.

Regseeker Backup
Thank you all for responding. I've learned my lesson not to use any reg cleaner tool. Unfortunately, this is after-the-fact. I still have the same problem and really need help with getting the background back. I do not see anyway to restore from backup. I can see the backup .reg files, but my only options are to delete them or add them to the registry.

Does anyone know precisely how to restore from backup? Step-by-step instructions. Or, better yet know the registry setting that needs to be changed and the value required?

Add them to the Registry.

That will add back to the registry what RegSeeker removed.
