Do you have a windows disc for the pc? If so, install the recovery console via this guide here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm
Once in recovery console enter the password for the administrator account (blank if you never set one) and then from there type into the console "chkdsk /r" (no quotes) and it should do a scan on the spot.
