Exclamation Cannot install applications on Windows Vista
Hi. Today I tried installing the LiveZilla live support client for my own website. Oddly, it didn't work and it showed an error message at the end of the installation. This one:
Quote:
The InstallAware Wizard has failed: "The system cannot find the specified file". Please check your settings and try again
I thought it was an error because I hadn't installed .NET Framework or something, so I downloaded the .NET Framework (3.5 SP1) setup, and tried installing that. It failed also, giving a quite vague error message at the end, not giving any information or an error code, it said just that there was an error in the installation.

I'm not a big techy guy, but I think it has to do with my Temp folder, seeing both these programs require to put some files in the temp folder. Somehow they're maybe not allowed?
Other programs that don't require to put files in the temp folder can be installed, so it had to be that.
However, I've tried about everything to give me full permissions to the temp folder (the one in C:\Windows\Temp and the one in %USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Temp), which I could, but this still did not solve any of my problems. I'm quite desperate now. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with my Temp folder now. Could anybody please assist me on this?

My temp folders actually look fine. I really think it's something else right now. For info, LiveZilla uses the InstallAware installer, .NET Framework uses Windows installer.

Thanks in advance.

The Windows temp folder is used rarely. The one used for almost all installations is the one in your profile. (Go to Start > Run, and type: %temp%)

I know of no installation (except maybe for some very rudimentary ones) that do not use the temp folder. So if others work, that is probably not the problem.

Yeah, I'm starting to think it's not the Temp folder now too. However, I have absolutely no idea what else could be causing this. I even tried installing a new Windows Installer. But guess what, the installation failed.

My first guess would be an infection that is blocking your attempts to install anything that could find it.

You may want to scan with a few scanners (if they will run), or post a log in the Malware forum.

Free anti-malware:

Dr. Freeware Boot CD Avast Scanner (also has partitioning tool, file recovery, drive cloner/imager)
Dr. Web Cure-It
Comodo Anti-Malware
Threatfire Free Edition
MalwareBytes trial
A-Squared
PrevX CSI Free Version
Spybot S&D
RunScanner
Ad-Aware
SuperAntiSpyware
Spyware Eliminator
Emco Malware Destroyer
Spyware Doctor
All-Seeing Eye (Monitors system - pretty annoying at first until all safe processes have been approved, but settings can be changed)
Arovax Anti-spyware
Trend-Micro Rootkit Buster
F-Secure Blacklight
Bootzilla (Bootable anti-malware CD with many other tools.)

"Instant" Anti-virus (No installation--just download and run the scanner):

Dr. Web Cure-It
McAfee Stinger
Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (This one installs but offers to uninstall after the scan. A fresh download contains the most recent virus definitions.)
PING with Clam (A bootable disk imaging CD with added anti-virus)

List of freeware security software
Guide to Free Security Software (ScanComplete Site)

Virtualization Solutions (Malware attacks become impossible because either the browser or the whole operating system are isolated from the real system):

SandboxIE (Virtualizes IE, Firefox, or any other browser and works on most other programs, too)
VMWare Browser Appliance (Runs in the free VMWare Player. The Player also will run any of 100's of preconfigured operating system and appliance images downloadable for free from VMWare, and you can even make your own VM's to run in it with the open-source VMmanager)
Artificial Dynamics Safe Space (Similar to SandboxIE, safe browsing and protection from malware and hackers)
Fortes Grand Virtual Sandbox
Microsoft Web Sandbox (Open-Source) (In development but usable)
Returnil Virtual System (The Premium version allows you to save all changes inside the virtual OS to the real system, but even the free version has a virtual drive where items can be saved outside the virtual container)
Windows Steady State (Now supports Vista, too)

Okay, have done scans with several programs, no malware detected.

Any other ideas?

Exclamation Internal error 2203
I get an 'Internal error 2203' when trying to install some software. I've done a Google search, trying to find answers, and I found that this means that the Windows Installer does not have the permission to temporarily store files in the TEMP folder to complete the installation.

That's my guess on it. I've set all permissions for SYSTEM, Administrator, my username to the max on the TEMP folder, yet I still can't install any software using the Windows Installer.

Could anybody please help me with this? It's a very annoying issue.

My first reaction to this problem is about the system files. I think you may have some of your system files corrupted. I would suggest a repair of your system via your original windows cd/dvd. Just insert your dvd/cd in your dvd rom and restart your windows. Make sure your computer boots from dvd drive. Follow instruction to repair the windows. This will not afect your files or applications.

I think you should give it a try.
