Word default language
I have just installed Word 2003 on my PC (XP). This is a CD I bought legitemately from PC world and have installed on both PCs and laptops in the past with no problem.

On this occassion its has set it default language as Welsh...!!! I have tried setting English as the default language using the tools drop down menu, and I have set English as the default language through the start menu. I have even uninstalled it and reinstalled it (Word), but it keeps going back to Welsh.

I'm not sure what I want to know most, how to stop it doing this, or...why? Why Welsh...???

Anyone...???

In Microsoft Windows XP, on the Windows Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings.

Unfortunately, no...
Thanks Beanie, but I had already tried that. I changed the default language via the tools drop down in word itself, and also using the method you outlined. It still goes back to welsh. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling word. Still it goes back to welsh.

The most bizarre thing is that if you try to run a spellcheck it tells you it can't because it has no welsh dictionary...!!!???

And of course microsoft are unavailable for comment.

Bugger, I wonder if the language you set for XP itself and keyboard have anything to do with it. If those where not set, just trying to remember how to check on that, as I have not done it after installation before.

I would certainly ring pc world and see if they have a clue (the place where you got the program from), also are you logged in as administrator when making those changes if not you wont always get a notice saying you need to be administrator to do it.

Hang on you go to start, settings, control panel, and then regional and language settings (picture of a little globe) you should be able to change the language maybe that might help, hang on that might be just another way to what you did befroe, tell ya you have me stumped.

I will wait to see what fixes this for you

Thanks Beanie. I'll try those things and let you know. The thing that gets me is, why Welsh?

I'll let you know.

Well, waddayaknow? I did as you suggested and found that the computer, which is Spanish, believed itself to have a Welsh keyboard. The answer begets a deeper mystery. I corrected that and now Word reverts to Spanish instead of Welsh, but that is at least logical, as the system is Spanish. I can live with that.

The keyboard has now gone ape. The percentage key is where the question mark should be and so forth, but I think I can fix that. I wonder if you can apply Freudian psychoanalysis to these creatures)? I have a PC with a Welsh id, an English ego and a Spanish superego... Not surprisingly it has gone psychotic...

Yeah got to watch these computers, they give you a false sense of security and sneak up on you and BANG they got you with some problem that defies any logical thinking to fix it. Hope you can finish fixing it, please let us know the outcome........(continuing saga)
