Unhappy sticky Firefox with AVG
I've been using Firefox and AVG for quite a while now without any apparent problems but I had noticed of late that Firefox had become very 'sticky', particularly when switching and scrolling between tabs and when cutting/pasting text (e.g. into the Save As dialogue). Recently, AVG wouldn't load because of a licensing problem. Doing a quick search to see what the problem may be I found the whole surfing experience suddenly liberated from it's sluggishness. The finger points to AVG. Is there anytrhing in the programme I can adjust? I've looked but nothing sticks out. Or, is there any free anti-virus software out there you could recommend which won't be problematic with Firefox?

AVG seems to have dropped the ball lately.

Firefox 3.5 is now out, get it if you don't have it already - its faster: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/upgrade.html

For alternative free anti-virus:

Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Avira: http://www.free-av.de/en/trialpay_do...antivirus.html

I happily used AVG free until they went to v8.x. Had various problem from the get go. So I uninstalled AVG and installed Avast free. Ran that for a year or so and just for curiosity and good things I heard and read about Outpost free firewall, I downloaded and installed it. Been about 2 weeks since I did so and so far I'm quite pleased with it. Small footprint and scheduled definition background updates have no visible effect on performance. Only complaint was the nag screen that would come up to prompt me to upgrade to the Pro version every time I ran a definitions update. Found a way to turn that off and it's running good.

I could post links, but gotta run. Just Google them and they are easy to find. Both are free.

Guys, thanks for the posts.

I tried Avast some time back because I heard good stuff about it but couldn't stand the voice. Presumably there was a way of turning it off but I think turning it off turned off other sounds as well (fuzzy memory here).

I'll try the free-av and outpost, as you recommend and post back.

Incidentally, I've re-installed AVG and the stickiness seems to have abated. Then again, I only installed the bits I wanted this time so maybe there was something in the bits I didn't use that was affecting Firefox.

I've been putting off upgrading Firefox because I have some add-ons I really like that aren't compatible. But that's the trouble with add-ons, I guess. Give me time, it'll happen!

Thanks again.

Ok, I've installed Avira and I seem to navigate a touch quicker but how do you disable that irritating splash screen each time you boot up?
