My best suggestion to anyone who uses AOL is DON"T...
AOL is well known as a resource hog and installing software into your system that may cause no end of problems. There are many, many ISP's available that do not do this sort of thing at all. It takes some relearning to use your computer after getting rid of AOL (which is no simple task in itself), but after you do, you will be a much happier computer user. You will need to re-establish all that stuff associated with e-mail (address book, e-mail address, e-mail client setup, etc.) but it will be worth it in the long term. You will also have to re-establish your browser Favorites or Bookmarks (or whatever AOL calls them nowadays).
An ISP's basic function is to provide a connection to the internet and, if you choose to use it, a home page. AOL has historically gone way beyond that fundamental purpose and thereby introduced a very complex and cumbersome program that loads up your computer.
You can get help on this forum on how to go about uninstalling AOL and the subsequent operations to get back up and running. All one need do is ask.
