Solved: back button
Hey, tech guys, sometimes my back (arrow) button won't let me go back. I have to shut down my Windows XP and it works fine when it comes back up until it decides not to work again. Is there something I can do (besides restarting or getting a new computer) Thanks. pat

It might help if you let us know exactly what software you using that is having problems with the back button.

I received two answers to my post, "back button". The first one asked what software was giving me the trouble. it's my home page, CBSNews, then it tranfers over to other programs, especially FanStory.
Second answer, not sure what you mean: shall I click on the back button and then click on the forward button (after going in to "customize" on IE toolbar)?
I won't know if (or when) it works until it locks up on me again, so it could be today, or two days from now. Usually it's same day stuff. Will keep tuned to Tech Guys. pat

If you have not been to someplace other than your home page, then you can NOT got back, there is nothing to go back to.

When you go to "FanStory" is this another website, and if so, does it open a new tab or session of IE?
If it is yes to my question, then see my first statement, it also applies unless you have gone elsewhere after you first opened FanStory.

DaveA, I click onto my home page, CBSNews, read the headlines, go to one of the stories posted and THEN when I try to go back to the home page by using the button in upper left, it won't let me return to home page. If I click into another website home page, one I've been using since February, and click to something within the website, it won't let me back up. I have to restart, and then it will work properly for awhile, then can't back up to previous page, or home page, again. Very annoying. Hoping for some answers. Appreciate your interest. Pat

Are you sure that they are NOT opening in a new Tab or new session?

Can you give us a screen shot of this?

I'm not too sure I understand what you mean. I've had this computer for about 5 years, and when I've needed to "go back" to the previous screen, it always did until recently. Now when I click on the "go back" button, it won't always go back to the previous screen. I have to restart and then it works until whatever happens, happens. I don't know what you mean by a screen shot. Nothing appears on my screen. It just won't go back. It probably won't be fixable, but I thought maybe it was just a matter of something fixable with a driver or something in the bios. You can tell I don't know much about computers. You can opt out of this if you wish, I would fully understand. Pat

Rather than restarting your computer, have you tried clicking on the HOME icon in the Toolbar at the top of the display? Doing this should display the original home page.

I'm trying this again. I don't think I'm getting through with my problem. I'll try to restate: I'm on home page (CBSNews). I find an article I want to read and click on it. Then I want to go back to my home page to find the next article and it won't let me. I have to click "home" on my CBSNews tool bar, which takes me back to the beginning instead of where I was before I clicked. If I use my back button, it takes me to where I was when I clicked. Been doing it that way for years. Another example: I belong to "FanStory" writing club and am on the home page. One of the contests is ready for voting. I want to read ALL the stories before I vote. I click into contest entries and read the first story. Then I want to read the next one and need to "back button" to bring up the stories again. Back button won't ALWAYS let me. I have to go back to home page, click into the contest again, read the story and do it all over again. It's doable, but the back button used to work every time I clicked it (as long as it was blue, of course). So I get disgusted and shut down, then it works again for a while. I have Win XP version 5, didn't like 6 and went back to 5, willing to try 7. I hope this makes more sense and presents the problem more clearly. Hopefully, I didn't confuse more. Would love to know if this is fixable. Thank you, Patwannabe

The back button used to work every time I clicked on it (providing it was blue, of course. That's a given.) The only way I know to fix it is to shut down and reboot. Then it works for a while or maybe a little more. I have Win XP ver. 5. Tried 6 a while back and didn't like it. Interested in 7. I hope this comes through clearer than previous post. Hopefully, less confusing. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you, Patwannabe

Hello. I'm very disappointed that I received no answers to this post. 32 people have looked at it, but I guess it can't be fixed. Sometimes a problem just takes a simple tweak somewhere and I was hoping that might be the case. The first time I posted this, I got several replies, but no one seemed to understand my problem. Thank you anyway. I appreciate the opportunity to share. Patwannabe

Hm, im a little confused as to what version of internet explorer you are using if using it at all. I would say, bump yourself to ie 8, then try running it in safe mode. See if that yeilds any joy.

Hi, tech guy. Thanks for clicking me. I am on IE 8 and have been for a while. How do I run "safe mode" and for how long. The only time I have seen safe mode was on Win98 when I shut down wrong. Thanks, Patwannabe
