Question WinMX with Linksys router BEFSR11
I have followed some of the suggestions in the other posts with regard to using WinMX with a router, but still cannot get it to work. I am using a Linksys router, model BEFSR11, with Windows XP Home edition. I have turned off XP's firewall because it was causing me problems in looking at files on my other computer. I figured it was okay since the router comes with a firewall. I followed the instructions at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.bucha...x/routers.html to get the inputs and outputs in the router set up. People seem to be able to look at my MP3's, but cannot upload them. If I do a search, it returns no results. I am using version 3.22 of WinMX. Any suggestions on other things I can try? Thanks.

Hiya and welcome

You may want to look at this thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/t85726/s8f...871c1c994.html

Not the exact same router, but very similar. Also, right at the bottom of that thread, I have sugested someting as the Bob is having the same kind of trouble.

Regards

Question Thanks for reply on WinMX with router
Thanks for the reply. I changed the listening port to 16699 as suggested, and now it looks like people are able to upload MP3's okay. However, I still get no search results at all, even after waiting a long time. I entered current artists like "Staind" and "Britney Spears", which should get a lot of hits, and I got nothing. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.

Okay

I assume that you're searching the Audio parts. Easy mistake to make, as I have done it this evening

Also, do you have the Bitrate at Any, or have you set it to a specific number?

Question Thanks for reply on WinMX
Yes, I had it set to MP3 Audio - Any bitrate. I typed "staind" in the first box below where it says Artist and / or Title. Finally, I clicked on the Search button to the right of the input boxes. I did exactly the same thing today, and now I am getting a lot of hits! Nothing has changed, so why is this happening? Also, I have a cable modem. What are the best settings for incoming and outgoing bandwidth with a cable modem? I really appreciate all your help!

The WinMX servers may have been slow that time.

This is how mine is setup:

File Transfers:

As you go thru the boxes:

180, 600, 300, 300, 300, 60, 60, 45, 45

Queuing:

Again, from top to bottom:

30, 30, 1, 1, 2, 14.4

Bandwith Throttle ( the important one):

Your modem: Whats its speed? Have a look here:

http://www.testmyspeed.com/speedtests/international.htm

If you're USA,

http://www.testmyspeed.com/index.html

Now, I have been trying some tweaking this weekend, and have this.

I use a modem that has a speed of roughly 512k.

Looking at this table:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.bucha.../limiting.html

Right at the bottom, I have chosen the following:

'Limit Outgoing Bandwidth' = 52000

So, and with another tweak, try having a look at your modem speed, then use the table. This is how I have it set to now:

Settings | Internet Connection

Incoming TCP Connections: Listen on Port 16699
In/Out UDP Packets: 16257 (used to be 6257)

Bandwidth Throttle:

Tick the second box, and I have mine set to 52000. The top box sets itself automatically. I set this Blank to begin with

Close the Settings, shut down WinMX, and try again. What should happen, is if someone is downlaoding from you, and one of the files that you requested kicks in to download, then your tranfer size increases, and theirs decreases.

Thumbs up Thanks for reply on WinMX with router
When I checked the speed at the website, it said 1.3 Megabits, but I didn't really believe that number. I do get fast downloads, but not extremely fast. Does this change your answers on the settings for bandwidth? Once again, thanks for all your help!

the number is in mps, if you divide it by 8 it will be close to what your download speed should be in kpbs

1.3 Megabits/8 = 162kpbs

something like that, anyways, it is quite within the range of a cable modem

Thanks brian

So, looking at that table, you want to put 10,000 to 15,000 in the 'Limit Outgoing Bandwidth' box. The Recommended value is 13000

Thumbs up One More Question on WinMX
Now that I have done all this and am able to download and others can upload, have I now made myself vulnerable to attacks? That is, since I have allowed forwarding through the router and so forth, do I need to take other precautions? The router has its own hardware firewall, and I always have Norton Antivirus running and keep it updated. Anything else? Thanks again for your help.

Not really, but you may want to doublecheck all files that you download. If they are not ending with the movie or mp3's extensions, but exe, scr etc, then scan before opening with an updated scanner.
