how to block or disable usb flash memories on windows xp
Hey guys

i have a question... how can i block a usb flash memory from a computer or disable it so our users can't use their flash memories and spread their viruses?! i just wanna disable the flash memory not all the usb portsv.

any software or a method from the windows xp it self does that?!

You can disable the USB ports but I don't think there is any way to lock it down to just memory sticks. I could be wrong though.

thanks for your reply but i know how to block the usb ports, but i don't want too,, cuz i need them to use the mouse, keyboard, printers, scanners, cameras..etc

i just want to block the flash memory...

I just read an article about Windows Steady State. Whenever I need to lockdown a system I usually see if Windows Steady State can do it. There is an option in Windows Steady State called "Prevent Write Access to USB devices". This just might do the trick for you but you will need to install Steady State.

I read somewhere that MS included this 'protection' in Windows 7 in an attempt to prevent things like the Conficker worm from spreading via memory sticks, and that they decided to make it available for the older OS's.

Yes you have.
It is not just a question of Autorun (ie start upon insert) but more a question of blocking the use of USB disks/flash etc altogether.
