Startup Programs
Hi,

The hijackthis log doesnt show you just the programs running at startup - it shows you a lot more.

To get a good idea of what is running at startup check the following places.

start->programs->startup. Anything in this folder will start when windows loads.

start->run-> and type 'msconfig' and click on the startup tab. everything in this tab starts when your comptuer loads up. generally these are the thigns that are down by the time.

Hope this helps.

one other thing.

personally I would uninstall any browser toolbars that you have installed. They tend to bog down your internet experiance and are a conduit for spyware.

best regards,
Jp

How do I find out what programs are running that do not need to be running. I have gone to run-msconfig, but don't know which programs I do not need running and which ones to leave as is. I removed what toolbars I could find.

comp.idiot:

I'll give you instructions for trimming down the startup load in the O4 startup list and the O23 services list.

--------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, we need to get rid of some of the useless and outdated programs in your computer and do some updating and replacing.

Open HijackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Uninstall these programs:

Acrobat.com
Adobe AIR

(These are unknowingly installed with Adobe Reader 9 and aren't needed.)

Ad-Aware (Lavasoft Ad-Aware)
Spybot - Search & Destroy
(These will be replaced by better and more user-friendly malware removal programs.)

Microsoft Silverlight
(It's known to conflict with Adobe Flash Player and isn't needed anyway)

Panda ActiveScan
Panicware Pop-Up Stopper

(These aren't really needed.)

If you're prompted to restart to complete the uninstall of any of these programs, do so, otherwise just wait and restart after you're done.

If you see any other programs in the "Add Or Remove Programs" that you don't recognize or use, advise me which ones they are. I can tell there's programs in there that you likely have never used or even know what they are.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Download these programs by clicking the green icon at each site:

AVG Free Edition 9.0.698

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41

SuperAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004

Download this tool by clicking one of the USA download links:

Norton Removal Tool 2010.0.0.98

Just download and save all 4 of them for now and don't install or do anything with them yet.

I've removed the programs as you instructed and saved the others to my desktop.

Here's a list of stuff I don't know if I use or not.

ATI Control Panel
ATI Display Driver
Browntech Image Plugin
Desktop Doctor
getPlus(R) for Adobe
HP Help and Support
HP Pavillion zv6000 User Guides
HP Software Update
Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1
Microsoft .Net framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181)
muvee autoProducer 4.0 SE
OmniPage Pro 9.0
OpenOffice.org Installer 1.0
WinRAR archiver
Yahoo Browser Services

I have these on my computer already:

ATI Control Panel
ATI Display Driver

(These are necessary for the ATI display adapter to work, so leave them alone)

Browntech Image Plugin
Desktop Doctor
getPlus(R) for Adobe
HP Help and Support
HP Pavillion zv6000 User Guides
HP Software Update

(These can all be uninstalled)

Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1
Microsoft .Net framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181)

(These are necessary programs and add-ons for the operating system, so leave them alone)

muvee autoProducer 4.0 SE
OpenOffice.org Installer 1.0
Yahoo Browser Services
Yahoo Install Manager

(These can all be uninstalled)

OmniPage Pro 9.0
(This is a very old version of scanner conversion software. The current version is 17. If you don't use it, uninstall it)

WinRAR archiver
(This is a utility similar to WinZip for extracting and opening files that come in .RAR format. If you don't use it, uninstall it)

-------------------------------------------------------------

I'm aware that you have AVG Free 8.5 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You have an older version of AVG, and I don't know if you have an older version of Malwarebytes. That's why I advised you to download the new versions.

What's the exact model number of your zv6000 series laptop? Here is the list of model numbers.

I have completed the removal as instructed.

I'm not sure if I need OmniPage Pro 9.0 to operate my CanoScan D1250 U2F.

Can you tell me how to make Windows Media Player my default player?

My laptop model number is: zv6233nr.

What's next?

Here is the support and software site for your HP Pavilion zv6233nr laptop. I highly suggest that you add this site to your browser favorites list so you can refer to it when you need to.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Since you're unsure if you need and use OmniPage Pro 9.0 for your CanoScan D1250U2F, leave it installed for now.

Here is the support site for it. I highly suggest that you also add this site to your browser favorites list so you can refer to it when you need to.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Install AVG 9.0.698. It'll overwrite and replace AVG 8.5, so there's no need to uninstall it first. Decline to install the AVG toolbar and the Yahoo search engine. After you're prompted to restart, you'll be advised to run an optimized scan. Decline to do so because it's not needed and it'll tie up your computer for too long.

Next, install Malwarebytes 1.41 and SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004. Make sure to allow them to update their definition files during the install process. Restart after they're both installed. Don't do anything else with them yet.

Next, run the Norton Removal Tool so it can remove all remnants of Symantec from that computer. Restart afterwards.

After all of the above has been done and you've restarted, start HijackThis and run a scan, then post that new updated log here.

Ok I followed your instructions.

I keep getting a pop up window, from Zone Alarm, for Java Binary SE or something like that, It's asking to update something. I denied it. Is this OK?

You've uninstalled both Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy, correct?

If you have, go into the C:\Program Files folder and delete their leftover folders - if they're still there.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then put a checkmark in

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1A74FBD9-9613-46B0-AB2E-647C19CEA51F} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_01) -

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_06) -

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0007-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_07) -

then click Fix Checked - Yes, then close HijackThis.

---------------------------------------------------------------

After the above has been done, restart your computer.

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then post that new log here.

We're going to put Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware to work next.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I've never liked ZoneAlarm and refuse to install it in any computer that I work on. It's too aggressive and annoying, and it can be problematic and conflict with certain programs.

If you've uninstalled Spybot and deleted its folder from inside the C:\Program Files folder, it's still has an entry in the HijackThis log. It's no big deal and we'll deal with it later.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Let's do a scan with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware and hope that ZoneAlarm or some other running program doesn't interfere with them.

Start Malwarebytes, then run its update function to get the definition files up-to-date.

After that's done, run a "quick scan".

When the scan is finished, select and allow it to fix EVERYTHING that it found.

Restart your computer afterwards.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware, then run its update function to get the definition files up-to-date.

After that's done, run a "quick scan".

When the scan is finished, select and allow it to fix EVERYTHING that it found.

Restart your computer afterwards.

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then post that new log here.

Advise me when the scans are done, then I'll instruct you on how to post the scan logs here.
