Solved: upgrading java
I received notification that I needed to upgrade the java on my computer to the latestjre 6 16. I followed lead downloaded and attempted to install. operation commenced then got error message 25099, could not unpack. Went to Java site there is the error message with indication that Sun are aware and looking in to it!!! Looked at their help site, advised to totally remove and clean all old java before installing the latest. This I have done. Still getting the same error message. Used CC cleaner and windows installer clean up to ensure clean uninstall. Checked, java ok in Firewall (answer yes) . Just to reiterate the installation commences, validates and registers, get to point of unpacking installer then up comes error as stated and operation then back tracks. Cannot get any help from java (unless prepared to pay some expert in USA!! )They don't respond to Emails. Obviously there is something programme on my computer which conflicts with this download, have run scans no malicious programms etc found clean. Very frustrated spent literally hours trying to sort out Hope one of you guys has come accross this problem and can help PLEASE cordially david

I've moved your thread from Hardware to All Other Software since I doubt this is a hardware issue.

Have you tried using the Offline installer which you cna find here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Also after uninstalling all Java versions from Add/Remove Programs make sure to delete the C:\Programs Files\Java folder as well and reboot.

Java
Many thanks triple6,

Well have tried all these , no luck still goes through routine "installer files have been downloaded, installing java, copying new files extractor, then the dreaded 25099, unzipping core files failed" I do not have any java on my computer , as recommended uninstalled and cleaned all. So perhaps there is something nasty in the woodpile? Very frustrating, particularly as Sun (java) appear to be agog with indifference. Pity tyhere is not an "add on" which tells you if there has/ is a conflict when trying to install upgrades. Hope that there are some other ideas I seem to have hours and hours on this. Wish Sun resolves this PDQ cordially Bristolian

Make sure the %ProgramFiles%\Java\jre6\ and %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_16\ directories are empty.

Use JavaRA to completely remove traces of Java on your computer before reinstalling the latest version of Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_16.

I've never had this problem myself and I see there are suggestions that certain games may be involved.

Whatever, there does seem to be a fix that worked for a few people (see Reply 10 here); http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?fo...readID=5354798 Hope it works for you as well!

Java installation
Yipeeeee,

My sincere thanks to all who contributed, was led by Togg to site where numerous bods had experienced the horrors of Java installation failures. The problem has been solved by jerry Jnr, who recommended that one changes the file name (see bottom of installation instructions)to which the download is to be installed voila, it installs without a hitch!!! So simple, comment, (that recommendation dates back) - surely (Sun)Java could have acted upon this problem and provided the answer more speedily? Hey ho. Once again My gratitude to those who take the trouble to respond and help to us lesser mortals. As my old granny would say, "for that help your on my blood orange at Christmas list" Cheers Bristolian

The Sun Microsystems website can be very confusing (and out of date!), so it is possible that that particular solution is buried somewhere in some remote part of the site. I found it by entering the error message in the Search box on one of the JRE download pages.

You can mark this 'Solved' by clicking on 'Thread Tools' at the top of the page.

PS. Just when you thought you were OK Update 17 has been released (and it appears to fix some security issues); http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/6u17.html
