Smile Search in EXPLORE doesn't work
Using Windows XP

microsoft sent messages claiming that some problems I had were caused by Word 97. I was happy with the performance of Word 97, but upgraded as they recommended. Now that I have installed Word 2007 search doesn't work when I search for documents created by the old program.

I have also encountered other problems in accessing and saving programs.
Is there something I need to do to get everything back in synch. I can usually get the job done, but it just takes extra steps and is frustrating.

Search in Explore is very important to me as I have a lot of word and excel documents and cannot always remember the file names.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Are you referring to the Search function within Word or the Windows XP Search?

What do you mean by Search in Explore (or Explorer?) doesn't work? You don't see any Search window appearing or when you type something, nothing happens? Please be more specific.

Are you talking about Search in the Start menu? Is Seach missing? Is it missing from the Context menu?

Thanks for your reply. I am talking about right clicking on start, then on Explore so that I can see all the existing files. Many times I can find the file myself.
The search function, is the same one that comes up when you click on start and then search. Search itself, seems to be working, but it just doesn't find the files. For example, if I list names that appear in the file title or within the file and then select my Word folder, it doesn't find the files that I know are there.
"Search is complete. There are no files to display" is the message that I get. The search is pretty quick.
This never happened before I installed Word 2007.

I don't know but it might have something to do with the fact that Word 2007 uses the .docx extension (another cheap trick from Microsoft to get people to buy a newer version of Word!!!) and older versions use the .doc extension.

Try searching My Documents or the entire drive.
Don't get me started on Docx.

Thank you for your reply. What you say makes sense. It's too bad that the people at microsoft corp either don't realize how much frustration is out there, or care anyway.

I'll find some way to work around this.

I really admire you for wanting to help others.
