Arrow Solved: Cannot install iTunes
(Running a Vista Computer)

A while back when I was using iTunes, it told me that a newer version was available. When I updated, I couldn't start iTunes afterwards, and couldn't open the iTunes folder (I didn't have access rights).

I ended up uninstalling everything and tried to reinstall from the apple website. After I downloaded the necessary files, I ran the installer and got the message (right when it was about to finish installing), "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.". I looked up this issue several times, and read and followed a few solutions:

- Uninstalled iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and Apple Application Support.

- Used Windows Installer Clean-Up to remove any other traces of the programs listed above.

- Updated to the latest version of SP2 and Security Updates (I couldn't install all of them because the updater wouldn't complete itself, so I installed the latest updates themselves).

- Signed in as administrator and allowed full access rights.

- Ran the installer as Administrator.

All of these and I still got the same message.
After I click OK, it rolls back the install, but both QuickTime and iTunes appear on the desktop after it's complete. When I run it, the setup ends up freezing at a certain point and then closes itself; afterwards, nothing else happens. When I go to right click it, it won't let me run it as an administrator. I click properties, and it says it's a shortcut application. I go to the file path, and the same thing happens when I run it (it's still a shortcut).

I go to the iTunes folder in C:\Program Files, and try to open it. I'm denied access as Administrator. I change it in the Security tab, open the folder, and run the 'iTunes' application inside. It denied my access, and once again changed it in the security tab (I have to change the owner rights, and then add the Administrator account in the permissions group and allow full control), run it, and it opens a dialog box stating, "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7.".

I am completely out of ideas, and any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks!

I had to allow access using the CMD commands to the ENTIRE program files folder. After that was done, I installed like I would, allowing the 'SYSTEM' account (only seen in the permissions section of the security tab) access the files that needed to be (installer told me which ones).

Completely remove iTunes and QuickTime and Reinstall
Completely remove iTunes and QuickTime

Note: Songs you purchased from the iTunes Store or imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes.

1. Quit iTunes.
2. Choose Start > Control Panel.
3. Windows XP and Windows 2000: In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.
Windows Vista: In Control Panel, click Uninstall a program. Alternately, in Classic View of Control Panel, click Programs and Features.
4. Select iTunes from the list of currently installed programs, then click Remove or Uninstall.
5. In Windows XP and Windows 2000, when asked if you would like to remove iTunes, select Yes.
6. In Windows Vista, if your permission is needed to continue, click Continue.
7. After uninstalling iTunes, do not restart if you are prompted to.
8. If other entries were present for iTunes remove those as well.
9. In Add or Remove Programs or Programs and Features, remove any iPod Updater applications that are listed in the same fashion as iTunes was removed.
10. In Add or Remove Programs or Programs and Features, remove any QuickTime installations that are listed in the same fashion as iTunes was removed.
11. Restart your computer.
12. After the computer restarts, open Local Disk C: in My Computer/Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
13. Open the Program Files folder.
14. Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Note: This folder may have already been deleted if iTunes was successfully removed in steps 1-8.
15. Right click the iPod folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.
16. Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.
17. Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\\Windows\\system32\\folder.
18. Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
19. Restart your computer.
20. Install the latest version of iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download.
