Post windows 98 stuck on c prompt.
Hi to all, Well ive certainly gone and mucked up big style now and any help would be very appreciated.
I have an old windows 98 pc which is not online I just use it for a bit of storage and playing around on. The other day I was looking through the device manager and looked at the properties of the cd/rom (no dvd) and I clicked on a box which was supposed to help it run better, I cant remember what it was called but then I cant remember if it was at that point or the next startup but what happened was every time it booted and got to the desktop with my icons on, it would restart itself! and this would go on all day if you let it. I tried safe mode to uncheck the box but it was'nt there. I tried all I could to rescue things but with no luck. So I thought I would format the c drive and reinstall from the 98se cd. from the c prompt I typed format c: which it did but now the cd/rom is not recognised. the actual cd/rom was replaced some years ago with a sony one which I have the setup disc for but thats not recognised either.
I did a bit of searching and found 2 floppy diskettes which came with the pc. 1 is labelled BTC install : CDRom driver for dos. Setup : CD Xpress for windows 95/98. Version 2.9. From the c prompt I typed a:\install.exe (just a guess) then I got a window saying "cant find MSCDEX.EXE in the DOS path. Please enter directory name that contains MSCDEX.EXE file" but I dont know where it is so I had to quit. The other diskette is labelled. Start-up diskette for AMD K6-2/450 MHZ. which I cant get to run, every guessed command I type returns "Bad command or file name". I also have the diskette I made years ago during first instalation labelled Windows 98 startup disk. with this one there's just a message "General failure reading drive A". I have discovered that if I reboot it and keep hitting the Del key it brings up the CMOS SETUP UTILITY which I did go into and loaded the setup defaults but that did'nt help either!!
So if anybody has any ideas or knows any commands I can use to get this pc running again I will be eternaly gratefull.
One other thing, the pc ime on now does not have a diskette facillity so I cant download anything to transfer over.
Many thanks in advance.

If you need to reinstall Windows 98, download a bootdisk from bootdisk.com. The executable you download will create a bootable floppy with cdrom drivers so that you can reinstall.

For your "General failure reading drive A" check in the CMOS setup utility to verify the floppy drive is enabled.

Hi Frank4d. Thanks for your reply, ime looking at the windows98 CMOS setup page now and next to Drive A: it says "1.44m, 3.5in. obviously the size of a diskette. It must be enabled for the other diskettes to work. Then under drive A its got Drive B: then it says None. No mention of any other drives like C OR D.
At the top of the page it has the date and time ticking away which is correct, but ive noticed I cant change or modify anything.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
