Solved: Computer slowing down - startup processes
I've recently noticed that my laptop (Windows XP) is getting a little slow and was wondering whether it may have something to do with all the programs running in the background.

I found the following post: http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-...ng-memory.html

This post provides great feedback from one of the moderators on startup programs and which are not needed. Would anyone be able to tell me the same for my startups?

I would leave the java and the MacAfee and uncheck everything else as unnecessary.

Erik:

After you go in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab) and uncheck any of the startup entries, click Apply - OK and then restart your computer.

When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears during restart, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in that window and then click OK.

If you want to research any entries in the startup list, here is a good site to do it.

Dear Rich-M and flavallee, thank you very much for your help.

flavallee - the site you sent through is excellent. I just cleaned up my startup list and notice the difference already.

Keeping as lean a startup load as you can will make a big difference in speed and performance, depending on how old and slow your computer is. It also reduces the risk of freezes and error messages.

Installing new programs and updating already-installed programs will add or re-enable entries to the startup list, so be vigilant of it and check the startup list regularly.
