external hard drive appears to be erased
I've been using my external hardrive for backup for a couple of years. Today my computer would not allow me access: error message. I tried rebooting - no good. I scanned the drive for viruses. Message said it found and corrected a few errors. This time I gained access - only to find that the drive was blank. Message said "This folder is empty."

Tried hooking it up to my laptop - same message. Any ideas how I can recover my data? All my videos and raw footage are also on this drive.

thanks.

What is the error message you are getting when you try to access the drive? this will help us to figure out what is going on and chances are the data is still there and may have just been marked for deletion so its flagged by the OS as to not be shown to you, you can try many unerase programs, or if you have a linux distro or live cd pop that in and boot up and see if linux sees the files, I just had the same sorta issue with my external windows was telling me nothing was there but I popped it into linux and now I can see all the info and its still intact.

Hi Thanks

the error message was K:/ is not available incorrect function. Now it is availabe but it just simply shows up blank with the message that file is empty.

You mention linux and I have no idea what you mean. My O/S is Vista.

thanks so much, Goody

Did this happen after a sudden power outage or after you turend your computer off improperly? You sound to be having the exact same problem as I am currently, where the partition table bits on the hard drive were wrote incorrectly having the drive show as RAW instead of NTFS if you right-click the drive and go properties what shows up in that windows?

I mentioned Linux as it is another OS you can get it on live cd search google for Linux live cd distro you will find many different flavours, linux is capable of reading the RAW partition format allowing you to recover your data and copy it off to another drive, or you may wish to fix the partiton table with partition table doctor however I can not guarantee this method will leave the info intact.

go to http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/8...tched-raw.html that is my post look it over
