Mounting or converting a raw disk image [DriveImageXML trouble]
Hey, I'm new here. I was told that techguy had the best English speaking computer forum and I'm looking forward to exploring it further.

My problem:
I usually run my backup to an external hd using DriveImageXML. The program creates two files, one file (if I understood correctly) contains a raw binary copy of the hd and an xml file that specifies the paths on the raw copy. But now I've got a problem, my antivirus software got angry and deleted the xml file. Before I noticed it the file had been overwritten and cant be restored with Recuva.

My approach:
I'm looking now for a way to get some of the files from the raw file. I have tried to create a cue file and mount the bin in Daemon Tools but it says that image is too large (47GB), I have tried to mount the raw image with Mount Image but it would not work.

My question:
Is there a way to convert the file to a convenient format (VHD or simular) or mount it? I appreciate any suggestions.

[Will add that I tried to contact DriveImageXML and ask if they have any indexing tool or similar rescue tools, but obviously just got the answer that they do not give support to the free version]

[
Lessons learned:
1. Just use proprietary formats for backup,
2. Always have your files in at least two places *cry*
]

Supplement: If it is the wrong forum, please move the thread

I have an external hard drive that is in a raw format was an NTFS drive but the partition bits got messed up and now it shows up to windows as a RAW partition long story short as we speak I am using a live cd version of Fedora Linux to recover the files (all the files on the drive as still in tact and working just windows cant read the RAW file format) but I have found that linux can and as we speak I am dumping the files to a new NTFS 1TB external HDD.

If your RAW file image from Drive Image XML is on an external hard drive I would suggest getting a copy of Fedora Live (do a google search for Fedora Live CD) and you will find it and then plug your external into the computer running the live cd and see if linux can read the RAW file that was created and if it can simply copy the files to another media or back to the hard drive as regular files then back them up again.

Let me know if it works for you appears to be working fine for me just taking some time as I'm trying to get back 400GB

Hm, I couldnt figure out the Fedora mounting since I am not good at Linux.

For anyone getting the same problem in the future, this is in short how I got the relevant files back:
1. Extracted the huge bin file with 7-zip.
2. Added the extention .dd and mounted it with http://www.mountimage.com (trial version worked well)
3. Ran a full disk recovery with RecoverMyFiles http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ and restored the files I needed.

Pros
- Got the files back

Cons
- Names, folder structure, and EXIF data screwed up.

Fedora would have mounted it automatically all you would have to do is go places and computer and select the drive from there.

What is the default file ending for it in that case? .dd? .raw? .img?
