No sound from computer?
Hi everyone,
Yesterday I got on my computer to watch a tv show and I couldn't get any sound. Nothing is muted and the speakers work fine. I am wondering what do I need to do to figure out why it isn't working? I tried checking for new drivers, restarting, and plugging the speakers into another source but it didn't work. Usually when I plug my speakers in I can hear a sound coming from them when they connect to the audio jack but when I try it now nothing happens. I plugged the same cord that I have plugged into my computer into my iPod and I could hear the music playing just fine, so I know it has nothing to do with the speakers.

I am worried that I somehow ruined the sound on my computer, I have my computer and my 360 and PS3 all connected to this audio switch from Radio Shack that I use since my stereo only has one input and i didn't want to keep changing cords. Two days ago when I was playing my 360 I went to push a button to change my sound to the PS3 so I could watch a movie and I got shocked, I'm thinking it was because of static shock that I got from my couch. The sound worked fine before but now it doesn't work at all. I am worried that I somehow fried my audio ports or something. How would I check? My audio port is built into my motherboard and I haven't done any installations lately. I run Windows 7 Home Professional 64 bit.

Thanks in advance.

One way to check if you broke your audio port would be borrow some speakers from a friend and check if they work. If sound was working before and you haven't changed any settings/drivers then it probably is a hardware issue - but TBH I don't know much about breaking audio ports. Although common sense is telling me that there can't be anything wrong with the port itself, but a component on the motherboard itself.

Well I plugged the speakers into my iPod and they worked fine. I'm thinking it's a motherboard issue, my computer suddenly stopped reading my second hard drive even though I haven't made any changes. Do motherboard makers offer some kind of support where I would be able to find out?

Yeah I'm also thinking you might have zapped something on the motherboard. Ad I would strongly advise that you get a full backup of your hard drive immediately because you might have done something to that and it could fail at any moment.

If your speakers worked fine in your iPod then its definitely not a speaker issue. As to getting support on it, a bit of Googling will probably come up with a support forum filled with nerds all about motherboards - or you could crack open the computer, try to see what make the motherboard is and Google that. If you still can't find anything then go to the manufacturers website, and contact them through that.

Hope I helped.

You helped a lot. Thanks. I won't be able to back up my hard drive cause it's my 1tb and I had most of it filled and I don't have any other hard drives big enough...
I'll look it up tomorrow morning and see if I can did anything on the manufacturer. If not I can always return it since I got it from newegg in the first place.

You're welcome, although you can't backup I still think you should backup your most important documents you cannot loose (although you should be doing that anyway :P ).

But yeah, good luck trying to get it fixed, and you can just PM me if you need any more help with this.
