Could be a number of things... could you send us some of the exact error messages you are receiving and what you did that caused them to appear? The more details you can give us, the more details we can give you

Messages appear two different ways-
1. From reinstalling games, which have worked before & still work on friends machine.-get message can,t extract corrupt cab file.
2.From downloads- applications (ie. updated drivers, downloads ok, gets ready but when install shield trys to install comes up with corrupt file redownload or verify integrety. Have tried other sites & even came up with this from magizine disk)

Will obtain exact error codes if i will try again later.
Thanks for now.

It's always a good idea to run the windows install cleanup utility to remove old update/install files. I've found that most failed installs fail because there are old files left in the program's installation folders.

The answer could be that the download file is indeed corrupt. Does the software vendor allow you to download from additional mirror sites? If so, try one. Otherwise, I'd contact the vendor and get help from them

Perhaps you have an infection of some kind. Hopefully you will be able to download and install HijackThis.

HijackThis instructions
Please send us a HijackThis log. To download HijackThis, go to http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...kthis/download. Install it, restart, and then run HijackThis. Choose the option to Do a system scan and save a logfile, and then post it here. Don’t do anything else!

Are you logged on as an Administrator? I notice there's a lot missing from your process list, and though I don't know the cause for sure I would first suspect it is because you are logged on as a restricted user. That may also help you installing your software.

I also notice you have some program from Iolo Technologies installed (I'd guess System Mechanic), which is probably some kind of auto-system-repair program. While I've never used SM or anything similar, I'm yet to hear about one of those "magic bullet" fix-all programs that doesn't cause horrendous problems like this, at least in the long run.

Do you have a Vista install DVD, or at least a recovery partition, as well as some way to back up your data? Don't do it yet, but your best bet might be to just reinstall Windows and refrain from using things like System Mechanic.

Yes I'm logged on as administrator. the problem is with installing .cab files.
Have reinstalled windows, but problems remain.
Mind you on the downloaded files have tried again with old modem and they worked. Not all though (like nvidia drivers).
Also may susspect memorey -have tried memtest-but susspect slot 2 or mem stick?

If MemTest points out a problem with some RAM (or even if it doesn't)- pull the stick out (or try by running your system with all but one of your RAM sticks in all possible combinations) and see if your problems persist. If they do, then you know that that stick is to blame, and it should be replaced.

Also an outside possibility of what was said, could be the hardrive going down the toilet. Also could have possibly been from running registry cleaners as stated before, once their damage is done, its done, your going to have to wipe and start clean if one of them hosed something...

Do you have a System Restore point prior to when the problem started. You can restore to there and see if your problem goes away. You can always undo that restore if it didn't help.

Tried jiggling sticks and installs did work.Put both sticks back uninstalled/reinstalled all ok?.
Then reinstalled printer driver/apps yesterday and had cab. file fault again!
So think one stick faulty again.
Could be mobo connection?
