This is the most current version of Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Is this what you downloaded and installed?

Is there a Java applet in the Control Panel?

What makes you think it's not working?

Open Internet Explorer, click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced(tab), then scroll down the list. Do you see a "Java" or "Java Sun" entry?

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab). Do you see a "jusched" or "jusched.exe" entry?

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK. Do you see a "Java Quick Starter" entry?

Subject to the outcome of the checks suggested by flavallee, you could also try going here; http://www.javatester.org/ and click on the orange 'Java Enabled?' box on the left hand side of the page.

If the tester reports that your browser 'can NOT do java applets' you will have to doublecheck your browser's settings to ensure that scripting is allowed. If you're using Firefox with the NoScript addon, you will obviously have to allow scripting wherever you go.

That's okay. You don't need to have Java Quick Starter loading and running in the background.
