Solved: GZIP File Problem
For Battlefield 1942. I cannot install the updates because my computer doesn't support GZIP Files. Please tell me how I can get my computer to work with these files so that I may play with the newest version.

If you have a answer that doesn't cost any money to buy a program of some sorts that would be appreciated.

I installed it but I don't understand on how to use it. I extracted it but when it came out it still doesn't work.

What is it supposed to even do, and how do I get it to make it so my computer can read the file.

7-zip is an archiving program much like WinZip or WinRAR. It's used to either compact or extract files. You can use 7-zip to extract from the GZIP file which contains the Battlefield 1942 update files.

In order to extract the files, open 7-zip and navigate to the directory where your GZIP file is located. Select it and click the Extract button (minus sign) from the 7-zip tool bar.

You will then get an Extract window asking you to select the directory to extract the files to. Use the browse button to navigate to the appropriate directory and click OK twice.

If you are not sure to which directory the files should be extracted to, either consult the web page from where you downloaded the update or create a folder on the Desktop, extract the files to that folder and look for a Read Me file or instructions file there.

When I did that a folder poped up with the same file as the one extracted with NO readme, and I still can't open the file.

That's another compressed file. It's odd to put a compressed file inside another. I hope the source was trustworthy.

Use 7-zip again on this one like just like you did the GZIP file.

Untar this on a bf1942 1.6 (rc2) installation:

# tar zxvf bf1942-update-1.61.tar.gz
Contents of the tarball:
bf1942/
bf1942/mods/
bf1942/mods/bf1942/
bf1942/mods/bf1942/contentcrc32.con
bf1942/mods/bf1942/init.con
bf1942/bf1942_lnxded.dynamic
bf1942/bf1942_lnxded.static

Well, it looks like it is indicating that this update is meant for Battlefield 1942 v1.6 (RC2). Hopefully that is the version you are trying to update.

It suggests that the files you extracted from bf1942-update-1.61.tar.gz should be copied to the directory containing the BF1942.exe file (typically C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942). I don't know what the zxvf refers to.

It then lists the names and directory structures of the files that should have been extracted.

Hopefully someone with UNIX or BF1942 update experience can confirm this before proceeding.
