software or hardware issue?
I was not sure whether this belonged in software or hardware- I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP, sp3. Most of my activities on the computer revolve around graphics and digitizing embroidery designs. I have used the same embroidery software for about 5 years, have gone through 2 upgrades, the latest in mid Dec. I will try to be succinct-however, I have spent at least 100 hours on the phone with tech support since Dec, and I still don't have a diagnosis.
There were not problems for about a week after the embroidery software upgrade. Then, when doing a normal function in the program, it would abruptly close. The first time was on a weekend so I uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Then I called the tech support for the software, and they showed me the fix for the problem-when the program closed there was an error message "defaults.dfl missing" Actually, I discovered the file was not missing, it was being renamed to an alphanumeric.dfl by some evil entity in my computer, somehow. This continued to happen up to 10 times per day, and they had me install the software on another computer, and I could not duplicate the problem there. They had me call NOrton, and we uninstalled my Norton 360, and eliminated that as a source of conflict. I should add that I have done multiple virus/malware/trojan, scans with NOrton and on the microsoft site, and they all came up squeaky clean.
The next thing was to go to Microsoft, and I ended up getting bumped up to Microsoft research team. THere were quite a few phone sessions, we did a repair install of XP, and I began doing windows updates, which by the way I do one at a time, manually-always. My instinct was that some corruption in a windows update caused theembroidery software issue. The Research Team said to get an external hard drive and start transferring data, so we could do a clean reinstall of XP.

MEANWHILE, I was at a Bernina class last week and mentioned the saga of the software to the educator-she said to consider my video card. I checked ATI for driver updates; they have been bought by another company and said to go to computer maker for driver updates for the ATI video card-so I went to Dell, plugged in my service tag, and my correct computer make & model came up. The first update in the list was marked URGENT- it was Cyberlink Dell Media Direct3 Windowed mode Version AOO-application. My computer does have Media Direct on it, so I figured if it was urgent, I should do it. It downloaded and installed ok, I rebooted, and it came back to the desktop briefly, then BSOD!! It said Bad Pool Header, had a bunch of error numbers which I wrote down. It was doing a memory dump and as I was freaking, after I wrote down the numbers, I shut it down. Then I turned it back on, my desktop came up briefly, and it was the same thing all over. By this time I was on hold for Dell tech support, and it finished the memory dump and then rebooted itself, same thing, normal desktop briefly, then BSOD, same verbage and numbers.
The Dell tech support guy asked me to do a diagnostic scan (which had been done a couple times before and all passed except the optical disk) He said it did not matter if the optical disk failed, there was no CD in it, that's why it failed the test (The test did not tell me to put in a CD, I could have done that??????) He said to write down any error numbers, he would call me the next day. The test took hours, and every facet of the test passed, except the optical disk again.

I did not receive a call back so I called in. I got a guy who had me boot up and press F12 to do the diagnostic (outside windows?) He said he wanted to listen to any alarms or tones, and he wanted me to pay attention to the LED buttons near the screen, above the keyboard. When it got to the optical disk test, it started making lots of obnoxious noise, and the lights started a pattern, which I related to him. He said the noise was 7 beeps- that meant my motherboard was bad. Is this possible to diagnose in 10 minutes like this? I had spent 100 hours on the phone with perhaps 2 dozen other people the past 5 or 6 weeks. Anyway, I have inhome warantee service, so he ordered the motherboard, told me it would be repaired on Friday. The tech never showed up Friday and due to a whole list of irrational events on the part of the service company, my husband and I decided we did not trust them to replace the motherboard. All this was related to the Dell folks, including copying emails to the Board of Directors. With the delay, I had a chance to read up on motherboards, because I'm trying to understand the issues here.
Over the weekend, I decided to boot up my computer and see what happened. IT booted up. It acted normal. No BSOD. So, I have been continuing my Windows updates, one at a time. Then I reboot, then I open my Bernina program to see if the issue has recurred. It is working perfectly. I am only doing updates which can be uninstalled in Add/remove Programs- Finally this evening, I did one update which was a HOTFIX, and rebooted, then opened my Bernina program, and the problem occurred. So, I fixed the dfl file, and went to Add Remove and removed that one update. Then rebooted, opened Bernina again, and the original problem did not recurr. Does this mean my assumption that a windows update caused the problem is correct?

Basically, what happened to cause the BSOD and why has it not happened the past 3 days? There is nothing different, EXCEPT the tech had me remove the battery when he ordered the motherboard. The battery is still out. But other than that, it makes no sense to me. If the BSOD kept coming back I would have tried to uninstall the Media Direct update, but I am not sure where to find it-I only see the original Media Direct in Add/Remove Programs, no updates for it. ????

The only other issue that may be pertinent is when I go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel, to the event viewer, in Application and System, there are some events logged which are red x circle errors, or yellow triangle ! which are warnings-they are all different. There are dozens and dozens of them over the past couple weeks.

But is this nuts? Should I be glad that I did not have a motherboard replaced unnecessarily (though it was free to me), or should I anticipate that one day it will go berserk again?
And by the way, that Media Direct URGENT update is no longer on the Dell site. Interesting. I entertained that it could be some malware or something?

Well, I will appreciate any inights, advice, ideas- you can beat me with a stick if it will help fix the problem. I am weary from this battle.

you know, I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, dell is rock solid on warranty replacements and whatnot. Sometimes, however, they may fall short on the explanation part.

If you still have your original data structure, and it sounds like you do, you will find a dump file at c:\windows\minidump. If you could zip that and upload it here, that would help immensely. That will allow us to see what your pc is telling you.

I'm about to toddle off to bed, but it sounds like you've fought the good fight for a couple months and now are just sorta curious. Welcome to TSG, btw.

It could be malware, if so, we got a team of trained pro's to take care of that. But I'd still like to see what's in that dump file. You will have to make sure that hidden files and folders are viewable; let us know if you do not know how to toggle that on or off.

thanks,

v

minidump
Hi Valis,
Thanks so much-I had no idea someone would see my questions so fast.
Amazingly, I figured out how to check to see that hidden files and folders are viewable and that was checked. I will attach the minidump zipped.
There is one HUGE tidbit I neglected to mention. This computer, just under 3 years old, makes a checkpoint daily to restore to an earlier point (system restore?) I have tried this numerous times during this saga-in fact, I tried to go back to the first week after I did the Bernina update, to restore to before the issue started. What the computer does every time is act like it is going to restore to previous point, then reboots, then tells me: Windows was not able to restore to the previous point. No changes have been made to your computer. I have asked every techie I talked to how come this does not work, and no one had any explanation. I have tried a couple dozen times. Ok I'll try to attach the file now.

Re: Dell-we have purchased 1 desktop and 4 or 5 laptops from them for kids and us at various times. All the units have given us quite a few years of service-even my previous laptop I gave my daughter, she used till it was 8 or 9 years old, when a cat knocked over a glass of water into the keyboard. And my anger is not directed to Dell specifically, but to the service company they are contracted with in my area, who lied 3 times in 1 day regarding the appointment which did not happen. Now I do not trust them. Since I started copying my emails to tech support and customer service to the Board of Directors, yesterday a lady from corporate called me, heard the whole story, and gave me her phone extension so I can call her for any further issues and that helped my frustration a lot. I always think that any problem can be solved, if you let someone in a position to do something about it know about it. Sometimes with multiple things going on it is easy to fall between the cracks.
Thanks much, I appreciate anything more I can find out.

It seems you have gotten in touch with everyone except the people who are ultimately responsible for the software working on your machine--the makers of the software. It is not the responsibility of Dell, Microsoft, or anyone else other than the developers of the software to insure that it is stable and runs in an operating system.

makers of software
Hi,
You mean the makers of the embroidery software? That would be Bernina, and yes, I started with them. They have been working with me on the issue since the beginning, sorry if that did not come through clearly. (In fact, I have been bothering them so much it occurs to me that I should add the guy to my Christmas card list.) It is a windows based program, and it was the Bernina tech support guy who showed me the fix for the defaults.dfl file. When that continued to happen, and when we could not duplicate the problem on another computer, he said it must be something in the os or environment of the Dell computer. He suggested that I start with Norton- and the tech support people there helped me totally uninstall Norton 360 to see if the problem resolved (and it did not), then helped me reinstall, and showed me how to except every Bernina.exe file in my firewall so the firewall would not interfere with the program. When this did not solve the problem, the Bernina guy said we had to go to Microsoft next-he said there have been about 5 people out of thousands who had a continued problem like this and it was resolved by clean reinstall of their os-which is where I was headed before the BSOD incident and the questionable diagnosis of bad motherboard.
The Bernina techies have been quite helpful, but they cannot help people resolve underlying computer issues. His purpose in having me install on another computer to see if we could duplicate the issue was to be sure I did not have a defective program CD or security dongle-and we eliminated that variable first thing. In fact, I have continued to be able to work in the other computer, which is a mini-notebook-not optimal for graphics work. Thanks~t

well, it looks like SRTSP.SYS was the culprit, and that ties directly back to norton.

So what the situation with norton? Have you talked to their tech support about possible issues with compatibility with your application?

Granted I only checked the two latest ones, but they both spit out the same error code, so kinda raises a big flag there. I know we had issues with our a/v at work not playing well with a third party software firewall, this looks familiar.

My question is thus: can you recreate the problem right now?

create the problem?
Yes, I think I can recreate the Bernina problem (defaults.dfl), by installing the windows update from yesterday evening again which caused it to recur (and which I then uninstalled).

If you are referring to can I recreate the BSOD issue, I don't think so-that just happened after I did the Media Direct update from the Dell site (that said URGENT update)
That is where it gets confusing, there seem to be 2 different issues going on, don't there?.

Re: Norton- their tech support was helpful, and they helped me totally uninstall the NOrton 360 and delete all traces of it from my computer. Then I opened the Bernina program and the dfl problem continued to slam the program shut. We surmised then that it was not Norton. The Norton person then helped me reinstall the 2010 version, and how to except the Bernina.exe folders in my firewall. They also suggested that I disable my windows firewall as 2 firewalls could cause conflict. The microsoft guy seconded that, he said the Norton one was the more powerful, to use it. He said the windows firewall is only there as a safety net for people who are not inclined to address security issues seriously.

Please clarify though-do you mean the BSOD was caused by a conflict between Norton and the download I did from Dell for Media Direct which immediately preceded the BSOD? And it was not really the motherboard? If so, what does it mean that that has not happened again? I know Norton does lots of automatic updates daily- has an update from Norton somehow reversed the problem? If you think I should call Norton tech support back with the info you have above from the minidump, I'll be happy to do that this afternoon. Have to go to the dentist to get a crown down in a bit. Thanks again, and again...............

After we uninstalled Norton, the only issue I had was with the embroidery software, the defaults.dfl file being "missing"

Occasionally, when I shut down before and now, I note that there are a couple of applications which delay shutdown, and a box comes up-I think they are related to Norton though I cannot tell you for sure, I think one is ccSvcHst.exe

Something interesting, in my reading I found a similar post from someone with the BSOD with BSOD, bad pool header, and the same stop error #, and they guy said it might be fixed by switching off the M$indexing service. One of the things I did since the BSOD was go from selective startup to Normal startup, in case something I did in selective startup was causing a problem. The disadvantage is that there are so many things running, but I wanted to eliminate my selective startup as a variable of the problem. After I went to normal startup, there was a little magnifying glass down in the lower right task bar, and when I hovered there, it referred to indexing. I note that is not there this morning. It was there yesterday. Co-incidently, I just opened my Bernina progam, tried the maneuvers which usually precipitate the defaults.dfl issue before I start my slow windows updates for the day. It did not occur when I did the hoop size change (the usual problem), but when I exited the program, I DID get the defaults.dfl message-AFTER the program was closed. There are numbers associated with the first box, exception access code, etc, which I have written down. If that will be meaningful to you I can relay them.

Another tidbit-Months or maybe a year ago, I was getting popups that said: YOur computer is infected, do a scan now!!! and it prompted you to begin scanning. I recognized this as a spyware or adware issue and just closed the box, didn't ever proceed with the scan. I called Microsoft about it and they said yes, it was a trojan of sorts, and recommended downloading a program called superantispyware, which I did. I did weekly scans and it always found dozens and dozens of tracking cookies, rarely anything serious. When this problem started up, I uninstalled that about a month ago, as there was no way to know if it was interfering with the Bernina software, no way to make exceptions that I could see, and because of possible conflict with Norton-overkill with protection, etc.

okay it sounds like you were infected at one point in time.........let's get a hijack this log and have one of our trusted advisors to take a gander at it.

to download the HijackThis Installer:
1. Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
2. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

one more thing
Hi,
I note the link for the onecare.live scan-- I did that scan on the microsoft site. It all came up clear EXCEPT 58 broken, incomplete or faulty registry keys, which it "fixed". After it "fixed" them, I could not get on the internet, could not get email, could not do a search for files on my computer, etc. The microsoft research team guy had to fix it- it was a urlmon.dll file and also ieframe.dll which he had to put back or something.

Thought you would like to know.
Thanks~

Valis,
My Bernina program is now giving me the exception access violation c0000005 after closing the program. It has done it 3 times in a row, so I am reading online about that. I found this on MS site:
http://windowsupport.biz/AccessViolation.html
and downloaded it to my desktop. Should I run it?

NO, that's not actually a Microsoft web site. Looks like what you've downloaded is a registry cleaner. Something we tend to avoid rather strenuously around here.
