Java JRE not loading a button on firefox
Ok first let me say i have no idea if i choose the right section for this thread but it seems to be the only one for it.

I dont seem to have any other problem with JAVA JRE when i browse the internet. But now i need to optimize my internet connection on my ISP website and i have to click on what it says is some sort of execute or start button on the page but it just does not work. The little coffee cup with the circular loading bar does is thing for a while but then only a black cube appear with nothing to click on. I should mention that the text above what is supposed to be a clickable button mention that you need to have the java plug-in ect, and i do, i re-installed the whole thing and still the same problem

I know its not the website problem since the costumer service guy of my ISP click on it no problem using my account.

Also i have tried it with my firewall off, same thing.

Im lost and i really badly need to do this. Any help would be much appreciated!

Do you have the latest version of Firefox (3.6.8)? If not you should upgrade and then try the ISP site again.

If you already have 3.6.8, what do you see if you click on 'Help' 'Troubleshooting information' and then 'about plugins'? If you scroll down the list of installed plugins you should see 'Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U20 or U21'. Any version lower than U20 represents a security risk and should be uninstalled (newer versions of Sun Java should uninstall old ones but I'm not certain they do!).

When you locate the Java details there is a table of MIME types with an 'Enabled' column on the right hand side. In my copy of Firefox they are all set to 'Yes' so I assume yours should be too.

There is a simpler way to check your Java version (and whether it is working) by going here http://www.javatester.org/ with Firefox and clicking, firstly, on the box at the top of the page (which identifies your version) and, secondly, on the orange 'Java Enabled?' box on the left hand side.

- I have Firefox 3.6.8, the lastest version.
- I have Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U21.
- All the column are set to Yes.
- Javatester.org says i have version 1.6.0_21 and that java is enabled.

And it still does not work, same dirty black box instead of a nice pushable button....

Thanks for the quick reply! can we give karma points here?

I suppose it was too much to hope that the solution would be easy!

How long have you been having the problem? Site admin people will usually try to deflect criticism by suggesting that the problem is at your end so, if it's been less than 24 hours, you might find that it suddenly starts to work because they've tweaked something at their end.

If you'd like to post a link to the page you're having problems with I could try it with my copy of Firefox to see what happens (obviously it won't work if I need to enter a username and password first!).

One other possible cause of your problem could be some type of 'security' app like a popup blocker (or the NoScript addon with Firefox) which could be preventing Java from working.

That doesn't seem too likely though because you say you don't seem to have any problems with Java when you're just generally browsing. Using Sherlock Holmes type reasoning, when you've established in two different ways that Java is installed and working in your browser, you're only left with the possibility that the fault lies elsewhere, whether due to some other software or setting on your computer or at the ISP's end.

Can you make the site work using IE?

PS. What are karma points? You're dealing with an old codger here!

Well maybe i should explain why i need to do this in the first place...

Yesterday the ISP cable guy came to my house to install a new modem because i have upgraded my cable internet from the normal high speed (7.5 MBPS + 30Go ) to their new 50 MBPS + 125Go .

The problem is it just wont go over 20-25 MBPS! First we updated the modem, then changed the modem. Then their tech support guys did a test which said that the connection from them to my modem is ok, but the speed is lost from the modem to my PC. So they said it must be that i have to optimize my connection from their website thing, maybe my WINXPSP3 is not setup for such a speed.

But of course the optimize button do not work and they say since its a java/software thing i have to seek help from software guys, not them.

Or as you said, maybe their just full of it!

Yes you do need a username+password, its in the personal account section.

Thanks in advance!

I may have ADBLOCK or some sort of security app like you said....ill check and disabled them, dont do much anyway...

Dont work in I.E either, first thing i did.

Well karma points are a function on some forum site to give points to people you find helpful or just nice. You can only give a certain amount on a point-based system. People with a lot of them are then inherently more trusted/admired.

Perhaps there's something going on with network cards or drivers and such (all things I know nothing about) or maybe it's just the old chestnut about ISP's claimed broadband speeds when compared to 'real world' ones!

Whatever, I'm not sure I have anything useful to add but I do wonder if anybody in the Hardware Forum could help?

Assuming that your problem hasn't been cured by the passage of time, I thought of a couple of other things that may, or may not, help to clarify the situation;

1. Try running the Secunia OSI (Online Software Inspector); http://secunia.com/vulnerability_sca...ne/?task=intro This requires a recent version of Sun Java and, if it works for you, would suggest that there is nothing wrong with your setup. I must admit that it sometimes gives me messages about problems loading the java applet but it does, eventually, work for me.

2. Just in case the ISP site really requires JavaScript, rather than Sun Java, go back to the javatester.org page and, this time, click on the orange 'JavaScript' box. If JS is working, a box will open confirming that and identifying the browser used and its JS version (1.3 for IE and 1.8 for Firefox, I think - my default browser is Opera and that uses version 2.1). If JS is not working that will probably be the result of browser settings or some third party software that disables it.
