not your average EXE registry problem.
Something is wrong with my registry. I can't start an EXE file. Sometimes it says that I may not have the appropriate permissions, but after using several different versions winXP_reg_fix.reg it now tries to get winzip to open it (doesn't work). I've also tried manually adding it as an application in the file type list of the windows explorer tools, even though there's no 'restore' button.

Perhaps the following fix? LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix

It restores default shortcut behavior.

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

didn't work
I did as instructed and nothing changed. I'm using an exe that installs the newest version of firefox as a tester. This problem started around the the time, I upgraded firefox for some reason. Now it doesn't run properly without all of the add-ons disabled, and none of them can update.

Am I correct to assume that you're only having trouble installing Firefox? You should have specified it right from the start. I thought you were having trouble with ALL EXE files.

In that case, running registry tweaks, like EXE or LNK won't solve a thing.

No no, it's all exe files. I just thought I would give more details because I don't really know what's wrong.

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Reboot.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I believe this to be caused by a malicious program that disables .exe files to run. I once have this problem with my HP laptop and end up calling a tech support. I guess it was HelpGurus tech. (HelpGurus.com). They remotely access my computer and ran a program that enable and make all .exe files on my system runnable again. I just forgot what it was. Anyway, that fixed my problem. I should've asked them not to delete the program though. =(
