I personaly use ESET and I'm very satisfied with it. It uses very little system resources and is lightning fast to scan. It has one of the best heuristics capabilities on the market.

Kaspersky is a good product too but it has a tendency to be overly reactive. It can be annoying and sometimes scary for beginners... It may also conflict with other programs sometimes.

You might want to refine the question by making it clear whether you are referring to the standalone antivirus programs or to the 'suites' that those companies produce, which include firewalls etc.

Whichever you meant, there is no complete answer to your question because what is 'best' for you will depend on what you use the computer for and your own level of awareness of the risks associated with surfing. Both products get excellent ratings at AV- Comparatives; http://www.av-comparatives.org/ but you have to make your own mind up as to what, if any, reliance you place on such tests.

There really is no substitute for 'hands on' experience of software so I suppose you could get the free trial versions and see how you get on. If you were to do that it would be a good idea to ensure that you also get any uninstallers that are available for each program so that you don't have problems getting rid of one in order to test another. I have seen a few comments suggesting that Kapersky can be very intolerant of other security programs, although that may be old news.
